Use http://www.zamzar.com to convert wps to odt, or install Novell version of OOo.

You need a branch of OOo which has the converter installed. For the current Works format that is the one found at www.go-oo.org. For older versions it is StarOffice 5 through 8.

Hello; I've just installed Open Office for my son so that he can use it with his Microsoft Works documents. The description said you could open Microsoft documents with it....now he has it all set up on his computer and finds he can't open his .wps docs. He isn't on broadband, so I am looking for solutions for him. Now I find that Open Office is not the software he wants, but some other software? Am I reading this correctly? Do I have to completely remove open office and install star office? thanks for any input. Jackie

OOo will open Microsoft Office formats, not Microsoft Works formats (which is something quite different).

You can either use the free on-line conversion website Zamzar to convert his files to .odt, or you can uninstall OOo and install a variant of OOo which has a Works convertor built into it: Go-OO.

so that he can use it with his Microsoft Works documents.
Presumably he still has his MS Works program, in which case he can save his .wps files as MS Word .doc and the latter can be opened by Writer.
When this issue has been resolved, it would help other users of the forum if you add the word - [Solved] - to the Subject line of your 1st post (edit button top right).

There are different branches of OOo. Two will open works files.

StarOffice 7 opens old Works word processing files. You might be able to find it for free at Avanquest.

http://www.go-oo.org has a version of OOo which can open Works word processing files, including later formats.

I'm glad I found this posting. I got confused and downloaded for the .wps word document also. I went to zamzar.com to convert the file to odt as suggested in the previous posting, and it worked beautifully. I just wanted to say thank you! I had been beating my head against the wall. Now I can get back to work :D

I have downloaded OO3.1 from www.go-oo.org in order to read Works .wps suffixes but when I open a document the heading is not transcribed and the text is underlined and crossed out with a horizontal line. Any thoughts ?? Using Windows XP

I believe there is a downloadable converter from Microsoft
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/than ... layLang=en
which converts wps files to doc files, which OpenOffice may handle better.

As with all converters, some formatting loss would not be unexpected.

I too cannot open works ( .wps) or word documents and can't find the converters to do so. I saw a couple people recommended zamar.com, which ends up being a sponsered site with links directing me to other file convertion sites. Can anyone recommend a SPECIFIC site with free file conversion downloads that will help me with this issue? I'm using OpenOffice 3.1 on Windows Vista. Thank you.

The site is zamzar, not zamar. On their home page, just follow the steps 1, 2, 3 & 4.

Zamzar.

Ugh, I was at zamar.com...my bad. Actually, I ended up (as you suggested to someone earlier) uninstalling OOo and installing a Go-OO which has a Works convertor built into it. I can now open my documents, but am having the same problem John described earlier (the heading is not transcribed and the text is underlined and crossed out with a horizontal line). Any suggestions?
Thanks!

I don't know anything about Go-oo, I'm afraid. If Go-oo is having diffculty with a file, whip it through Zamzar and see if it handles it any better.

Try
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/deta ... laylang=en
for a Microsoft wps to doc converter.

This url works - I've just tested it!
