My friend has OpenOffice on her computer. She typed a document and emailed it to me. How do I open it? I have MS Windows Vista and Microsoft office 2007. Are they compatible. Thanks. my email address is laura_maynard.at.yahoo.com, if anyone has a suggestion to solve this problem.

Either you install OpenOffice.Org on your computer (it is free after all and it can perfectly be on the same machine as Microsoft Office) or you ask your friend to save the document at the proprietary format used by Microsoft, like Word 97/XP/2003.

You can also install the ODF plugin from Sun. That will enable MS Office to work with ODF files.
Apache OO 4.1.12 and LibreOffice 7.5, mostly on Ms Windows 10
