Change picture orientation: portrait/landscape

Post by MrAustin »

Hi , I have been using open office for a week now and I am adding photos to documents I am making and I cannot change the photo from landscape to portrait. Is there a way I can get my photos to appear in portrait? I cannot find any way to change the display of this. Even when I add a photo that has been taken in portrait it still loads in landscape.
Thank you in advance for any help.

Is it a Writer (textual) document or other?

Tha "landscape" and "portrait" are Page properties in the AOO/LO, but you can ROTATE some inserted graphical objects in the documents - independently from the page orientation.

it is a text document.
The landscape/portrait orientation of the Page will not rotate the Page contents. You must rotate the picture itself: you can adjust the rotate property of the image in the Writer document, or you can rotate it by a third party software before you insert it into the document.

See [Tutorial] Some useful hints on using images for a discussion on how best to handle images in Writer.

It's a property of the image. Open the image in IrfanView and type R to rotate it 90 deg right or L to rotate it 90 deg left. Save it. Insert it.

Showing that a problem has been solved helps others searching so, if your problem is now solved, please view your first post in this thread and click the Edit button (top right in the post) and add [Solved] in front of the subject.

Also, while manipulating the image with IrfanView, as John_Ha suggests, it would be good to do any cropping and enhancement needed.

As a new poster you will find much useful information in the Writer FAQ, the Writer Tutorials, the up to date AOO Writer for Students and the Writer User Guide. May I suggest you bookmark the pages.

Press F1 to access the Help screen and search for your problem

The chapter headings in the manual are:

1 - Introducing Writer
2 - Setting up Writer
3 - Working with Text
4 - Formatting Pages
5 - Printing, Exporting, Faxing and E-Mailing
6 - Introduction to Styles
7 - Working with Styles
8 - Working with Graphics
9 - Working with Tables
10 - Working with Templates
11 - Using Mail Merge
12 - Tables of Contents, Indexes and Bibliographies
13 - Working with Master Documents
14 - Working with Fields
15 - Using Forms in Writer
16 - Customizing Writer – Keyboard shortcuts.

When a pop-up window opens, click the Help button for extensive help on that function - it is often more comprehensive than the manual.
