3.5" diskette icon

Post by Dick-san »

Hi,

Why do you use the image of a 3.5" diskette for the "save-to-disk" icon?
Myself, I understand what it is, having used 8", 5.25" & 3.5" diskettes back in the day!
I guess folks under 25 have had it explained to them, so life can go on.
Note that the satnav in my Seat Ibiza has the same image for "save".

Someone will have to think of a new (media-independant) symbol!
Where I was working, the firm used the image of an arrow pointing to a box.

Regards,

The LibreOffice has a lot of different icon set, but all of them use the diskette icon for the save procedure:

Built-in icon sets:
Breeze
Breeze dark
Colibre
Elementary
Karasa jaga
Sifr
Sifr Dark
Tango

Optional icon sets:

Galaxy (https://extensions.libreoffice.org/exte ... icon-theme)
Oxygen (https://extensions.libreoffice.org/exte ... icon-theme)
Industrial (https://extensions.libreoffice.org/exte ... icon-theme)
High contrast (https://extensions.libreoffice.org/exte ... icon-theme)

Since the LO 6.x.x version you can create and install your own icon set for the LibreOffice in .oxt extension format:
https://design.blog.documentfoundation. ... on-themes/

try it:
- download one (or more) of the optional icon sets,
- unzip it (the .oxt is a zip archive really),
- search the *save*.png files in the archive (use the wildcard)
- substitute the "Save" icon file/s/ in the archive to the desired .png icon file (with same filename) in the "iconsets" library inside the archive
- ZIP the extension and rename it back to .oxt
- install the extension.

Notes:
1. Optimize your icon files before you use it in an extension. Check the size, type, resolution, color depth of the existing icon files, and try to create your own icon with similar properties.
2. It is a new function of the LibreOffice. The created .oxt iconsets will not work with the Apache OpenOffice.

LO 6.0 also has the elementary icon theme which has an image of a page with a down-pointing arrow for the save icon. It's the default icon set in LO 6.1.2.1 on Manjaro and Ubuntu MATE 18.10

It's like tradition. Everyone knows what a symbol means ages after the context is lost.

See? Totally out of context, but still understood.

In computer context, most people still remember how to use the floppy. In car context, well ...

What did the blonde say the first time she saw a 3.5" diskette?
"OMG, someone 3D-printed the save icon!"

The ideas is that everyone understands what this icon means, even without the experience of using "this thing".
In any app, at any device seeing such icon you will know what it is for. Now it is something like international sign "save"/
