[info] Editing a file at a URL

Post by huw »

An interesting issue, and one to watch out for when opening a file from a URL.
http://www.openoffice.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=88385
  • With a browser, click on a URL to an ODF file and it opens in OpenOffice. Edit, save, close. OpenOffice releases the file, the browser detects this and uploads the changed version to the URL.
  • Alternatively, open the URL directly from OpenOffice, edit, save, close. The edited version is uploaded to the URL.
Both of those are in an ideal world. In reality the former is fraught with risk, as the person who raised the issue has found. In my opinion the latter would also require testing for each particular client & server combination before trusting.

For occasional use it is probably best to get used to the fact that after opening a file at a URL in OpenOffice, it is a very good idea to do a Save As before editing it.
