Would a list of other recommended apps be useful to users?
Would a list of other recommended apps be useful to users?
In recent threads I've seen various applications and utilities recommended to users. I'm thinking of such things as FoxIT PDF Reader, ClipGuru, EssentialPIM, Jarte, Scribus etc.
I wonder if a list of these somewhere on the forum might be useful for the users who come here? I'm thinking of something simple, nothing more than a list of the apps gathered into categories with a one-line description and a link to their web page.
I don't mind helping to compile this.

There is a small list like this on the OOoWiki....

And then there are several OOo "distributions" with several add-ons and additional software to download or to be purchased on a disk.

I imagine that several must haves for Windows are no-needs for Linux and I bet several things are needed for Linux that are already catered for in Windows.
I just wish I could get the hang of Spread-sheets and I don't even know where to start with Databases.

Not necessarily.Weatherlawyer wrote:I imagine that several must haves for Windows are no-needs for Linux and I bet several things are needed for Linux that are already catered for in Windows.
- Nvu and its replacement Kompozer is cross platform
- Thunderbird and the Lightning plugin are cross platform
- Pidgin runs in Windows and Linux, and for MacOSX you have Adium (which can be loosely described as Pidgin for OSX)
- The Gimp is cross platform
- Scribus... cross platform
- Inkscape... cross platform
The biggest issue is more likely keeping the list useful, and not having it become just a list of someone's favorite and totally unrelated applications. If the focus can be kept on listing cross-platform opensource applications that would fill out the missing bits for someone's office tool set, then it could become a very useful resource.

+1
Cross Platform Open Source is "the future" of computing. That way I can work with MS Windows, Ubuntu, OSX, Solaris, MS DOS, UNIX, Sparc, CPM, sorry, where was I, and it comes down to what works best for me and my data. (P.S. the new web based applications frighten me, I don't want to be online 100% of the time, persistence of connection, privacy, having the software change whenever the web company says it should be...)
sorry, just a little venting.

See you needed to be more precise with that question, "Do people still use Windows?".
Now in one case here what is used is old windows...yes, the older the better.
You take the window, one that has been removed form it's casement, and attach a flower box to the lower part of the actual frame. Then put a nice bouquet of silk flora ( none of that junki platic stuff ). One may or may not attach legs to the rear, or brackets for hangin on a wall.
Take it to your local craft fair..and voila, a perenial crowd favorite...
