OpenOffice.org 4.0 Features

Hello.

If at some point a version of OpenOffice 4.0 should appear, I hope that this is also available as 64-bit. In addition, the surface should be as easy as using Microsoft Office to be designed.

As long as they don't solve the problem of saving table properties (Issue 94630) it will remain a mediocre text processor for serious corporate business. I think it is also appalling that only a few persons in this community have taken the trouble to flag this issue as important enough to cast their vote to get this fixed. Unfortunately I do not have the skill to fix this flaw, but to me it saving ALL table format properties is a trivial task that can be done within an hour. If not, than there is something seriously bad with the OpenOffice model :!:

I would like a new type of application...
"Book".
It would be a cross between writer and calc in that it would resemble writer but would have tabs like calc to represent the chapters.
I could use this as a note gathering booklet for my job, where I collect arbitrary lumps of information and just need somewhere to store them that is searchable and indexable.

A writer document is not right for this as it's just one long document. Calc is not right for this as spreadsheet fields are not suitable for large blocks of text with formatting.

The tabs should be positionable on any side; top, bottom, left or right as the user desires (something I wish calc could do by the way). Each tabs contents can be of any length and support writers formatting abilities. Tabs can be re-ordered as per calc.

The way I currently store my information is separate files in a folder. Being able to gather them into one file, would be so much nicer for me.

Any thoughts?

After a user in the users@openoffice.org mailing list brought up the same subject I started doing some research. As far as I can tell, so far, the addition of Calc type tabs is do able. What I can find in the ODF requirements shows that it should be allowed. The combining of Writer and Calc 'sheet' though is prohibited by the idea that you can only have one mimetype in the archive, either ODT or ODS not both. I am not a programmer so I am having a hard time finding where the content.xml files are created in the OOo source code. :(

I do agree that there are times that having the ability to at least have several 'documents' in one file would be very useful.

I'd rather see OOo concentrate on improving the existing modules instead of adding new ones. There are already many applications designed for notetaking:

+1. You can design a database to do the note taking. Or you can use the Heading 1 style for the topic title, and then you can use the navigator to browse through the notes. Even a tabbed document is still one document. And I see a problem with those tabs: what when you get so many notes that you can't display tabs for all of them? The screen is only so wide.
It's very simple: OOo is already quite bloated enough and it already has some components like the HTML editor that aren't really up to scratch. Do we really need more components that have to be maintained by the same small set of developers?

Therabi, so I'm not alone. phew. I don't think I would be needing to mix mime types. I'd be happy with a version of writer with tabs. 8-)

Thanks for the heads up Bill and RightNote looks like it would fit my need, however from another angle, if one takes that approach, then why not forget OO entirely and just use a separate word processor, spreadsheet etc from different suppliers. To me, a product such as OO is there to provide a suite of applications for use in an office as a single bundle and I'd have thought a note taking app would easily qualify for being one of those applications.

Floris, if OO is too bloated already, then I agree that they should be ditching features like the HTML editor, which I'd say is completely unnecessary in an office suite.
In terms of your suggestions, a tabbed document might be one document under the covers, but you would not be able to scroll down in one tab right into the next tab's text, which is what would happen with your suggestion of using Heading 1 styles. As for lots of tabs, they could be handled as per Firefox etc, scroll buttons at the left and right hand ends.

My idea was not limited to note taking. Think of this, the Medical services field uses several forms that are stored in a folder. Now as it is a person would need different files to contain all those forms. With tabs you have one file that could contain all the forms. The same idea works for several other fields as well.

It is a very bad idea to manage medical information (or whatever other critical information) with office suites. While the OO community can't even properly store a table format they should not even dream of the facilities that you propose.
