does anybody know which and when another step of project Renaissance will took place?

are they preparing a new prototype?

i wonder if they learnt something by the feedback users gave untill now.

since the negative feedback was very strong, i would expect a lot of changes.

i found this nice add-on for MS Office that "hides" the Ribbon introducing a new tab with all the old GUI layout and commands.

http://www.ubit.ch/software/ubitmenu-languages/

a similar solution would be a bless for Renaissance as well.

Renaissance lovers would use other tabs with big icons and Ribbon-like design.

Renaissance haters would just use the "old GUI" tab without being annoyed by the Ribbon-like new GUI features.

all users would be happy and the controversies regarding Renaissance (including the "stop openoffice renaissance project" petition, and all the flames and wars in blogs and forums, including this one, would be over).

saying nothing about "hate" of users (experienced and serious) towards Ribbonization of GUI. A great impartial point of view! (ironic mode on)

once again I ask: why Renaissancers love so much Renaissance project? I guess they want show their ability to mimic Ribbon so Micro$oft can hire someone of these. No other logical reasons I see for this obstinate will

Renaissance Wiki FAQ say:
"Question: Why don't you just copy the Ribbon interface of Microsoft
Office 2007?

Answer: OpenOffice.org has millions of users all over the world, and for
Project Renaissance we have defined the goal to serve them in the best
way possible. However, the convenience of the Ribbon UI is still subject
to heated discussions among Microsoft Office users and its acceptance
among OpenOffice.org users is very low. Therefore, aside from any
licensing issues, it is very unlikely that the Microsoft Ribbon UI would
be the appropriate solution for OpenOffice.org users."
I'm happy they finally admitted that acceptance of Ribbon GUI is low among OOo users...
that's why the petition against Renaissance project collected 533 signatures

however I still don't fully understand that FAQ answer...
when they say that " it is very unlikely that the Microsoft Ribbon UI would
be the appropriate solution for OpenOffice.org users"

what does this mean:

1- are they still denying the too many similarities between Renaissance GUI and Ribbon?
2- did they finally decide to give up with OOo GUI Ribbonization?

When you tried prototype after finishing evaluation, a questionnaire / survey opens, now the project processed survey and blogged about:

i think those result have not been calculated in a correct way.

as user pablo pointed out at GullFOSS ( comment 22 at http://blogs.sun.com/GullFOSS/entry/res ... e#comments )

they just purged the % of users who had no answer and calculate final results ignoring "no answers".

for example:

Opinion E1) The user interface of OpenOffice 3 needs to be completely
redesigned.

Answer Count Percentage
No answer 131 8,21%
(-)(-) Disagree totally 206 12,91%
(-) Disagree 257 16,10%
(o) Neutral 218 13,66%
(+) Agree 344 21,55%
(+)(+) Agree totally 439 27,51%

if you consider the "no answer" you see that the real percentage of people asking to redesign OOo GUI is not 53% (like it was announced at GullFOSS) but it's now 49%...

if u purge "no answers" you manipulate the final result since people who did not answer to some survey question are still OOo users who took part to the survey and cannot be ignored.

i think "no asnwers" should be considered as "neutral" ones.

by the way IMHO even the 53% result was not such a clear win...
moreover i wonder why did they take so much time to publish those results and why they did this strange % count...

news from Project Renaissance...
it seems they completely changed direction...

if you download novembre(decembre project update:
http://wiki.services.openoffice.org/w/i ... -12-03.odp

take a look at the screenshots and you will see that the GUI is now more similar to the current GUI...
the awful total-MS-Ribbon-clone of previous prototypes is no longer present. :bravo:

You never answered about the votes rate of the petition. So I monitored it myself. The trend is pretty what we had guessed. Perhaps the 50,000 target will be reached in some centuries.

nice graph you did. :super:
doesn't matter all the blah blah blah you say to denegrate it... the petition won and that's sure!!!
moreover no single forum or discussion collected so many single user hits: 701 !!! and all against Renaissance!!!

somebody tried to start a pro-Renaissance petition (and I respect it since they had the right to do so) but it miserably failed... only 45 signatures in 2 months (of note I report they used the same scam-site of my petition... the same site you criticized so much... weird isn't it?)

but let's go beyond numbers (701 vs. 45)
the proof that the anti-Renaissance movement won is that project Renaissance team itself is progressively retiring from it's aim to clone MS Ribbon.
did u download that file in my previous post? did you take a look at those new Impress GUI screenshots?

what happened to the awful chunky big icons and vertical grouped clusters of buttons of the Renaissance prototypes? :?: :?: :?:
it seems to me that the GUI in those screenshots is 90% based on the standard GUI design. :super:
that's mean they are strongly reconsidering their aim.

they will never admit it but they finally found they were driving in the wrong direction and now they are doing a 180 degrees U-turn.
the petition represented an excellent mean of pressure to make them stop their stupid "let's Ribbonize OpenOffice" masterplan.
now they are concentrating into a more interesting GUI that seems strongly based on good old standard OOo GUI. :super:

I'm very sorry for you guys... you will not see the Ribbon GUI of your dreams on OpenOffice.
but if you like it so much I suggest buying a licence of MS Office from uncle Bill.
if you wanna play with a Ribbon, take the original, don't contaminate OOo. 8-)

Another interpretation is that the whole anti Renaisance/anti Ribbon petition was premature, a false alarm and an utter waste of time and electrons. The Renaissance project would probably be at the current stage if there had been no petition. Where it yet might end up, who can say? But as it's Christmas, season of good will to all men, I hope you all feel much better for having tried whatever it was you were trying for. :-)

Tommy, I won't even try to answer your post because it proves once again that you are still in your MS conspiracy dream. So be it if it makes you feel better.

Bye.
Edit: Just an edit to avoid responding the below post: as said in other threads, no, I don't like the Ribbon interface neither! but it doesn't mean that the whole Renaissance project has to be thrown away.

I already know that song, Hagar...
when you are without arguments you start saying you don't care to answer... very childish attitude IMHO...

face the facts: OOo will not become an MS Ribbon clone, as project Renaissance team initially aimed to do...
their last public announce showed that they dramatically changed the basic concepts of the new GUI which seems very far away from the unusable, awful Ribbon-clone they tried to impose but that was rejected by users complains (like the petition).

so, Hagar (and Villeroy) is time for you to say farewell to OOo Ribbonization!!!
long live to TRUE OpenOffice!!!

You know instead of the ribbon can't we add an interface similar to blenders open gl rendered buttons? I mean you can resize them, move them to any part of your window according to your needs, split, merge etc etc. This would be a great help for an office software.

Renaissance (OOo ribbonization) was a fiasco...

the petition (733 signatures) and protests by many users on blogs and forums worldwide made the Renaissance team renounce to that annoying interface...

I'm glad that such a useless and annoying GUI will never see the light on OOo.

let the Ribbon be an exclusive of Microsoft Office users....

Please, does anyone have a cached copy? I tried the http://blogs.oracle.com/GullFOSS/entry/ ... ew_ui_july trick but no joy, it seems that Oracle has either purged (or made impossibly obscure) this particular Sun content.

I have caches of various things in Diigo, but not this.

If some kind forum member has a cached copy, I would appreciate receiving a copy also so that it could be forwarded to the developers working on User Interface (UI) improvement, for their information. I haven't seen the suggested change in the above URL, and don't paricularly care if the UI is or is not changed, but those working on UI changes ought have as broad an information base as possible.
