Recommendations for open-source CAD?

Post by TheGurkha »

Does anybody have any recomendations for open-source CAD?

I want to do 2-d drafting, no need for 3-d modelling etc. (I tried Draft-IT but don't like it.)

It is not OpenSource but ProgeCAD does have a free personal version available for download. ProgeCAD is based on the IntelliCAD source code that was released for a time. Basically it is an AutoCAD clone and may work well for you. Check out the free version here:

Hope this helps.

Here are two Open Source solutions, however they rather aim for 3D, but also have 2D modules:
FreeCAD
BRL-CAD
OOo 3.0.1 & DEV-3.1 • WinXP pro 32-bit + SP3 + current patches

I don't know if they are good or not (I'm not a cad designer), but I know qcad and freecad are both open source. Also, opencastade seems promising:

I use DeltaCad [shareware, and well worth it.] I also have on hand the free 2D offering from the otherwise commercial software provider, Siemens. It's called Solid Edge. Their 3D is awesome, but costs. You can download the free 2D version if you give them some personal information. They are a solid company, so I wouldn't worry about that. My engineer son-in-law uses their 3D program on the job.
