FYI New LibreOffice Forum 8-)
Hi,
Just letting you know that The Document Foundation has finally decided to launch a discussion forum for LibreOffice. They are still setting it up but I recommend getting your preferred username before they start advertising the forum.
The temporary URL is here: https://vm222.documentfoundation.org/
See you over there!

Fair. I found it on their mailing lists. I believe they plan on retiring the Ask platform because it is hard for many to use.Bidouille wrote:After Nabble and Ask, new forum attempt?

Documentfoundation.org has some sort of SSO tool that they use for multiple software (Nextcloud, Redmine, Discourse, etc.)Villeroy wrote:This pops up on first log-in after registration:

Discourse is FOSS software (GPL-2) - the permission request is for you to share the DocumentFoundation information with the Discourse app. I don't believe there are any trackers or information sharing between the Discourse instance and the Discourse developers.

The Ask site is not a forum, but a questions-and-answers site. Unfortunately, lots of lusers fail to understand the concept.Bidouille wrote:After Nabble and Ask, new forum attempt?

and this one is fading away slowly together with OpenOffice.
We could have had it all. In 2011 this forum was ready to go green but the foundation was not ready to host this database of knowledge and documents. I registered at the new forum just to learn that the most important feature is not implemented for "security reasons".

This forum is successful because of documents and nothing but documents. Lots of documents. More than 1000 from me alone.

As a user of and a contributor to the ask.libreoffice.org I didn't exactly fail to understand the Q&A idea. Like many contributors, I failed to spot it as a valuable concept concerning the requirements. I also failed to understand the advantages of the specific software used and of the chosen configuration - if there is sufficient choice at all.esperantisto wrote:The Ask site is not a forum, but a questions-and-answers site. (I have to admit that I never seriously searched for alternative software in the Q&A field, and that I know next to nothing about probably fundamental disadvantages of alternatives looking somehow better on the surface.)

Wow. I had no idea how contentious an issue this was. Ironically TDF is having trouble with revenue and the sites they were referencing no longer exist because of expenses. Some sort of comment on the dangers of purism vs principles..I think that TDF don't understood too.
Read this old discussion about.

The ask qna site has internet culture problems. I think this thread explains the issue clearly: https://ask.libreoffice.org/en/question ... ibo-forum/
Q&A sites like stackexchange aren't interpreted as places for discussion, even if they could be used as such. Likewise, having email notifications for Nabble is annoying to many people who use email for services and personal correspondence. TDF trying to avoid the proper forum concept feels like hubris to me.
There are PHPBB to Discourse migration tools, maybe they can bring this forums content over there when AOO eventually retires.

No, TDF isn't having any trouble with revenue. Please don't spread incorrect information like that. TDF is doing fine: https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/TDF/Ledgerspheonix wrote:TDF is having trouble with revenue
There have been recent discussions about long-term sustainability of the wider ecosystem around LibreOffice, outside of TDF. But that's a separate matter.

The Q&A askbot approach is a good idea if properly implemented. To work well, it needs skilled maintenance.
When anyone can suggest new tags and nothing is in place to encourage self restriction and the use of preexistent tags, the tag structuring is largely broken.
It is possible to build a really nice FAQ from the input gathered by the service. This requires a bit of work.
Also, the core helpers seem less willing to recognize that some users have trouble relating to even the most basic guides, and need advice relating to their specific issue. There is some hostility towards the most insecure of askers. (Of course I am guessing ; what I perceive as insecurity may indeed be mere laziness. I give them the benefit of doubt.)
Still, the service runs nicely along. With small design and organizational changes I guess it could be excellent. Running it by anarchist principles can work when users are skilled, but in this case administration is called for.
I guess this should rather be posted to the ask site, but I guess many of the people there are also here, so not sure that I'll bother. It is not happening today... call me lazy
