I select an extension and select the "get it" button. It downloads to a temp folder zipped. I unzip it in a new folder. The files do not install with a installer. How do I get these extensions to work. When I goto extension manager and click add a "look in" window pops up it opens into my documents. How does this thing work?

Click Tools-->Extension manager--->Add then navigate to the location where you saved the extension. Select and click Open.

Yeah I did that that on every extension that I downloaded. I download the zipped file. I unzip in a new folder that I name. I goto Extension Manager > Add. It then opens a file browser to "Look IN" for the file. There are multiple files in that extension folder but none with the installation extension thats needed to load the file (.oxt). SO, it does not recognize any file to open. I am OS Windows XP Pro SP3, 32 bit.

Don't unzip it, rename it to .oxt and add it with the extension manager.

Edit: Corrected typo: read oxt and not odt!

You do not need to unzip the extension. The extension manager will take care of it's installation.

You were given the correct info by thomasjk above:

Please be aware that not all '.oxt' will work in every OO/LO version.

Only unzip the extension if you are going to do a manual installation which bypasses the program's installation routine - manual installation used to be the only way to deal with LibreOffice default extensions - I think that has now changed.

To all that responded to my post, thank you. My OS auto loads the wizard to extract zipped files, which I was using. I am now able to add templates and extensions. All instructions I've read concerning adding extensions didn"t mention not to unzip the files. Usually I always unzip downloaded programs and the installer is located in the unzipped folder, or the installer auto loads. Again, thanks for the help, it is greatly appreciated.

This is a problem with IE that changes the extension from .oxt to .zip because it detects an archive. Indeed .oxt is a .zip archive but it's not a reason to change its extension. Use Firefox instead for example.
