DDE links to embedded spreadsheet fail when file reopened

Inserted a small calc spreadsheet (.ods) into a writer document. Insert/Object/OLE Object-Create from file.
Copied a cell and pasted it into the writer document Edit/Paste Special/DDE Link. Creates a 1x1 table.

This works perfectly. When the spreadsheet changes, the linked tables are updated.
Save the document (ODT format) and close.

Reopen the document.
Links no longer work. Paste special no longer works.

I have searched and browsed but could not find anything quite like this.

Can this be fixed? Is there another way to accomplish this? Any advice appreciated.

PS. There is a popup asking to update links. Replying Yes or No does not seem to make a difference.
