Thousands of layers of text appearing only in print preview

Hello,
When I open the document it looks perfect, simple word doc no pics or charts. When I print preview it looks like thousands of layers of the same text. When I print it shows up with the thousands of layers of text. It literally looks like I took a black market to the body and blacked everything out because the text layers are so thick. The original doc was cut and pasted and it again looks fine, no layers in white text, no formatting. I'm stumped!
