Developing a grammar checker

Post by africajohn »

Newbie here and likely posting in the wrong forum.

I am considering developing a spell checker for an African language, BUT...
in the process of collecting the word list I might also be able to create the backbone for a grammar checker.

I think I can easily link individual words (for the spell checker) to things like parts of speech (noun, verb, etc.), verb conjugation (1st person singular, 2nd person singular, etc.), tense (present, past, etc.), and so on.

Bottom Line: What is necessary to create a grammar checker?

Have a look at http://wiki.languagetool.org/ it is an existing grammar checker which you can drive by writing rules for your target language.
