[Solved] Creating a list of illustrations

Post by EdIsenberg »

[I am posting this because I found it difficult to find the answer to this question, even though actually creating one once you know how is so easy to accomplish.]

Often you want to insert a list of illustrations in your document. I needed one because I had to make global changes to repeated iterations of one illustration (really a large icon) that I use to separate portions of a chapter where the Point of View has changed. Unfortunately, one cannot do a FIND on illustrations or pictures. By building a temporary list of illustrations I could at least know on what pages these illustrations occur.

Creating a list of illustrations is easy! :D Follow these steps:
  • Click on the INSERT menu item on the top.
  • Click on INDEXES AND TABLES.
  • Click on INDEXES AND TABLES again.
  • Under TYPE AND TITLE click on TYPE:
  • Choose ILLUSTRATION INDEX.
  • For information on the options on this next page, click on HELP at the bottom
  • When you click on DONE, your list will be created. SUCCESS!

I am fairly sure AltSearch extension will allow searching for illustrations (and many other options). However, don't explore this now - get your current work finished using tools with which you are familiar.

You could also use the Navigator (F5) to locate images in your document.
Edit: Use the Picture dialog (r-click on the image) and assign a name to the picture - this name will appear in the Navigator.
