[Solved] Creating an active Table of Contents

Post by Dandy66 »

How do I create an active table of contents? This is where each listing in the table is a link to that chapter in the document.

Hi and welcome to the forum!

A search would have led to this one amon many others: [Solved] Make Table of Contents hyperlink?

Please add [Solved] at the beginning of the title in your first post (top of the topic) with the edit button if your issue has been fixed.

thanks for the reply. When I go to the entry part I do not get the window as you show it. I am using version 4.1.3 if that makes any difference.

How did you create the ToC? What steps did you follow?

I have not created the TOC yet because I do not know how to do it as a hyperlink TOC.

How do you try to create the ToC? We need to know exactly which screen you are seeing.

I found the window described above; however, I do not get what it should be. I get what you see below. I only need the ones with the numbers 1,2,3,4,5,6 after the word Chapter.

Here is a sample ToC file. I suggest you right click on this and select /Edit ToC from the popup. You will note that the ToC entries are generated by use of Heading 1 2 ,3 ,etc styles in the document.

I have not found a way to work with that. I have the book already written and there is a Heading 2 for each chapter as Chapter 1 or 2 or 3. I apparently am not sharp enough to make this happen. I will need detailed steps to make it work. Please be patient.

I have to go offline now, but if each of your chapter headings is set as Heading 2 style. try /Insert /Indexes and Tables /Indexes and Tables, select Table of Contents from the dropdown and change the "Evaluate up to level" on the Index/Table tab 2. Now press the Entries tab, highlight Level 2 (on left), click in the first blank Structure box and press Hyperlink button. Now click in rightmost blank structure box and again Hyperlink. Now click OK and you should get a ToC. If you do, help for further customisation can then be queried and take place.
Edit: an outline of generating a ToC is at

Thank you so very much. You have been a great help. I need this TOC in order to submit my manuscript for publication.
