[Solved] Using already created OOo Draw file as letterhead

Post by Dave_pele »

Hi all,

Just to put it out there, Im really computer illiterate.

Okay so I had someone create a letterhead for me with my firm logo in Open Office Draw. Its now saved and pimpin'. The actual content of the letterhead appears along the left hand side vertically. I would like to set it up so the margins begin after all the content in the letterhead... so whenever I open the file I can start typing away to whomever.

Basically I want to use this file as my template for all letters, memos, etc that I compose in the course of my business.

1) How do I save the margins once I have chosen them in Open Office Draw, so that whenever I open the now saved letterhead file it can immediately serve as a template with already pre set margins?

2) Is there any way to convert the file, now saved as Open Office Draw file in ".odg", as an Open Office Text file? Is this even necessary? I was thinking that if it was in Text it would be easier to manipulate (read: write in) (??)

Thanks so much guys. I really grateful for any advice or feedback. Please keep in mind that I am a knob when it comes to computer and/or software as Im sure is evident from my post.

Greetings & welcome to the OOo community forum!

Here's what I would do:

1) File > Open; select the Draw document

2) Click and drag the mouse to get a selection rectangle around the logo graphic; release the mouse button to select it.

3) Edit > Copy to copy the selected graphic(s) to the clipboard

4) File > New > Text Document

5) Edit > Paste to insert the logo as a graphic object.

6) Right-click on the logo > Anchor > To Page

Position and size the logo as you want it on your letterhead.

7) Format > Page > Page; set the margins where you want. You can adjust them so that the logo is outside the text area.

8) File > Templates > Save; give the template a name, and OK.

To create a new document with the template as a starting point:

File > New > Templates & Documents; choose your template; OK

That's a bit thin on some details; just ask if you get stuck.

Acknak,

Thanks so much for your reply. You are a life saver.

Im experiencing a problem:

I have successfully copied and pasted both the Logo and the text (i.e. phone number address etc) that I originally have composed in OO Draw to OO Text. When I go to set the margins, when I click "ok" to set them, the entire field where the graphic and info text are shifts over to the new margin. In other words I am unsuccessful in creating margins that effectually leave the Logo and info text 'outside'.

Any ideas?

p.s. Im using a mac
