[Solved] Catalina on Mac - Can't read DOCX mail attachments

Postby olepompey » Mon Oct 21, 2019 1:12 pm

Since upgrading to Catalina on Mac, I can't read DOCX attachments in Mail.Com. I'm on latest OpenOffice 10.1.7.
Any ideas?

Your upgrade may have reset file associations that tell the OS which program to use to open which type of file. See if the advice Q33/A33 in [Tutorial] Mac FAQ is of some help.
Cheers

Spot on David. The file association was blank so I followed Q33/A33 as suggested and I can now read DOCX attachments.
Thank you

Save a copy of the file to your PC. You may need to unblock it - in Windows go r-click the file > Properties > Unblock.

Now go File > Open ..., and try opening the file. Describe what happens.
LO 6.4.4.2, Windows 10 Home 64 bit

See the Writer Guide, the Writer FAQ, the Writer Tutorials and Writer for students.

Remember: Always save your Writer files as .odt files. - see here for the many reasons why.

Often email attachments need to be Saved to a local hard disk folder before they can be read. Depending on the email program, they are sometimes in a restricted location and all one can do to them is to Save them to a known location.

Edit: It can happen - again depending on email program used - that such attachments can be edited without Saving. However, such alteration may not be Saved, and will be lost. So always better to Save the attachment to known location before doing anything to it.
