The command buttons in OpenOffice are a dark blue. I am unable to read the text names inside of the buttons. Can the button colors be changed?

Try settings in /Tools /Options /OpenOffice /View. Change Icon size and style.

If you are on a Mac, the menu is under OpenOffice -> Preferences

I spent 10 minutes looking in preferences and could not find any way to change the colors command buttons.

Try settings in /Tools /Options /OpenOffice /View . - I was unable to locate any such path.

I appreciate the effort but I can barely see any text inside the command buttons.

As Rory said, look under OpenOffice | Preferences on Mac.

However this post may help you.
