[Solved] After closing & reopening new AOO file, can't edit

I used OO to open an existing Word file, saved it as ODF Text Document (.odt) with Automatic file name extension. I closed it.
When I reopened the same new OO I could not edit it.
The small blue Word logo still shows next to the "(document name) - OpenOffice Writer" at top of file.
Running OpenOffice 4.1.6 on macOS Mojave Version 10.14.1.

If you first open AOO, can you open the file from the Recent documents list?

When I click on a closed file in Recent documents this morning a notice came up Users/(my name)/Desktop/TEL.odt does not exist. I may have deleted history yesterday. If I do not close an AOO document, I can always open it. When I reopen an AOO document converted from Word and cannot edit it anymore, I open the original Word doc. again via AOO and then can edit it in AOO.

The small blue Word logo still shows next to the "(document name) - OpenOffice Writer" at top of file.

The title bar should have a Writer icon, not a Word icon. If it's a Word icon you may need to reinstall OpenOffice. See [Tutorial] Mac FAQ Q03/A03. Or see Q33/A33.

Does it say {document name} (read only) - OpenOffice Writer in the title bar?
• If so (read only), click the Edit File icon in the Standard toolbar (fifth from the left).
• If not, why do you say you "could not edit it"?

Then use File → Open and navigate to the directory where you saved the document.

I cannot reproduce that problem. If I open a document which someone created with Word and use File → Save as to create an ODT file, when I open the ODT file I can edit it. However I do not use MacOS 10.4, OpenOffice 4.1.6, and I don't have any Microsnot products on any of my computers.

You may benefit from scanning through the Mac FAQ to see if any of the situations there are helpful for you.

If this solved your problem please go to your first post use the Edit button and add [Solved] to the start of the title. You can select the green checkmark icon at the same time.

Thanks for everyone's patience and great suggestions.

Reinstalled AOO this morning. Same problem.

Every time I close a converted Word doc to AOO, I do a Save As an ODF Text Document (.ODT) doc.

When I reopen the same document converted to AOO, it comes up as a Word doc. that I can't edit.

I can go into AOO "Recent Documents", reopen a Word document in AOO and edit it.
But, if I close that same converted document and click on the document's icon, it opens as a Word doc., which I can read only-not edit.
So, I'm doing double steps by constantly having to go to AOO's Recent Documents to again reopen any and all docs. I converted to AOO from Word.

Try resetting file associations for .odt and .doc files.

The reason for the Word icon is this: an update may have caused Ms Word to assume responsibility for opening them. Change the default program to open them back to OpenOffice. lgusaas's pointer to setting File Associations will allow you correct this.

Wow! That did the trick. Thanks Larry! Hopefully it will work for any Word doc. I want to convert to AOO.
