Document font too large (Calc, Writer; zoom at 100%)

Post by alex1234 »

Hello everybody,

I've a strange problem with a fresh install of OpenOffice 4.1.3 (Rev. 1761381) on MacOS Sierra 10.12.5.
In Writer and Calc documents, the content appears too large. I attached a screenshot showing:
- bulky document content at cell A1 (Writer document not included in screenshot, but same problem)
- document zoom at 100% (red mark on the lower right)
- general scaling option at 100% (red mark near the middle of the screenshot)

This problem is true for new documents as well as for documents that have been saved with the Windows version on another computer.
If I scale the document down to around 50%, the content appears in a normal size (or shorter: it's oversized by around 200% :-)).
Funnily enough, the very same behaviour is true for a fresh install of the current stable release (5.2.7) of LibreOffice - other programs are not affected.

What I tried so far:
- remove Application setting in <user profile>/Application Support/OpenOffice
- reinstall OpenOffice
- look for suspicious accessibility options in MacOS's system preferences

At this point, I can only start guessing:
- are there some options for retina screens going wild here (note the 200% zoom, it's a MacBook Air without retina)?
- are there known issues with other installed software (Java: not installed; but GnuCash installed, which comes with GTK)?

Perhaps someone has an idea what else could be checked...

Thanks & best regards,
Alex.

Did you ever find a solution for this, other than manually scaling the document?

I have this problem with Libreoffice Version: 5.3.6.1 on El Capitan (10.11.6) and an 11 inch Macbook Air. For example the attached screen shot shows part of a spreadsheet with the 9 point Lberation San fint selected. It's obvuious the font is much bigger than 9 pts. The spreadsheet renders normally at 100% on my Fedora linux laptops (which have the Liberation Sans font too.)

Please upload a small (128kB max) file showing the problem so it can be analysed.

The problem has nothing to do with the file. Literally create a new spreadsheet and type anything in.

I'm uploading a screenshot with a brand new spreadsheet that hasn't even been saved, with the font formatting dialog open, and including a screenshot of FontBook, the native OS font sample utility, showing the same font at the same point size. The only thing I did other than that was change the font in LO to Arial, as the default of "Liberation Sans" isn't installed in the OS for FontBook to display in comparison, but "Liberation Sans" was the same size within a few pixels.

Are you sure it is 10 point? It's why I asked you to upload a file so I could check.

This forum also handles LibreOffice queries. Much of the code in AOO & LO is the same and many people here use LO, so please give us a sample file.

I'm fairly certain it's an issue with the software failing to deal correctly with (inferred) pixel density. If I open the same document on a MacBook Air (13" 1440x900 display, ~130ppi) and a Mac Mini (20" 1680x1050 display, ~100ppi) (all the same software versions), I get dramatically different on-screen font sizes: on the former the ratio between font height and the height of a standard button-bar icon is about 1:1 (comically large text), but on the latter, it's about 1:2 (appropriate). If I lower the screen resolution on the MacBook (to ~115ppi) and relaunch the app, it selects a more reasonable font display size (still largish), which persists until I change the resolution back to native and restart the app.

Please upload a small .ods file showing the problem so that it can be analysed as all else is guesswork.

Use the Upload attachment tab below where you type (128 kB max) or use a file share site for a larger file.

You're asking for irrelevant data, John; an ODS file will show you nothing. The screenshots and narrative that have already been provided establish that the problem is dependent on screen resolution, not on the contents of any file.

The attachment - uploaded by the original poster - shows an option: That is scaling value. That will "resize" the User interface, but it is not same as the Zoom function.
And there are an another function: The Zoom is for the view of the document (only). Maybe the value of the Scaling option is different on your computers, but maybe the adjusted Zoom factors are different too... The zoom slider is located in the right-bottom corner of the sreen in the AOO and the LO applications.

Check the Zoom factor in the right-bottom corner of the screen, or please upload screenshot pictures about the right corner of the screen and about the Scale setting. (The size of the picture files must be less than 128 KiB: please reduce the color depth, but do not reduce the resolution of the pictures).

LIbreOffice doesn't have that "Scaling" setting, but I downloaded the latest AOO and tried adjusting it. If I set it to 80% (the smallest value allowed) it does reduce the size of the text, but also reduces all the other text in the UI.

I've checked the Zoom setting; it has been 100% in all of my tests.

Here's are screenshots of three configurations: Mac Mini with 20" 1680x1050 display, MacBook Air 13 with 1440x900 display, the same MacBook set at 1024x640. Note that in the middle one, the software appears to have decided that it's on a high-density display and should enlarge the type substantially. Granted, some people might want this, but generally a laptop with a small screen is used at a closer distance, and everything else in the UI is scaled accordingly. It's just the document content that's being rendered in large type, which is counterproductive on a small screen.

A different user profile makes no difference.

My OS (10.12 Sierra) doesn't offer an option to "Open in Low Resolution"... presumably because I don't have a Retina Display.
