[Solved] OpenOffice constantly verifying before opening

I am a fairly new to the Mac but suspect what's happening can't be right.

I have downloaded Apache Open Office 4.1.3. I think I installed it, but every time I shut down my MacBook Pro OSX 10.9.5 it seems to disappear. I can't find the OO icon on my tool bar and I have to go to the download folder to open it. Then I get a message saying it is verifying it before anything happens.

I've used Open Office years ago on a PC and just know this can't be right. Thanks for any help.

I'll leave that to a Mac user - I haven't touched an Apple computer since 1979. but I am aware that installation on MAC OS differs from other operating systems.

Sounds like you didn't install it. Open the .dmg file you downloaded and drag OpenOffice.app to the applications folder.

This is the basic method of installing applications on a Mac. Any basic book on using a Mac, which any new user of a Mac should have, would have the instructions.
