Says file does not exist

Post by shaullent »

Whenever I try to open a file I have been working on, it says: file does not exist. Not sure where it went and how to open it??

Where was saved the file to? (Onto a removable media or pnto a NAS, or onto a cloud service, or onto a local HDD...?)

Can you find the file with a file manager software? (is the file exist now?)

Which AOO/LO application you used when you saved the file?

What fileformat have you used? (native ODF or other foreign filetype)

What filename extension has that existing file?

As soon as possible do the following:

Download Recuva or PhotoRec (only one needed) and let it do an indepth recovery of deleted files on your computer. You may get a file containing some or all of your data (or not). Do this as a first priority; other use of the computer may overwrite any existing but deleted files and prevent their recovery. There is no guarantee that you will recover anything useful.

Do the above soonest! This will scan your computer and attempt to recover any deleted or temporary version of your file. Latter you can follow the methods Zizi64 has outlined to try to find an existing copy of the file.

OP will need photorec as s/he is using MacOS - recuva seems to be Windows only

Depending on how the file is being opened - e.g. most recently used list - it may still exist, but not be in the same location; possibly on removable media, or has been renamed. A bit more detailed information from the OP might help pinpoint the problem.

Thanks for pointing that out, robleyd. In the event that the file is actually deleted, for whatever reason, a recovery attempt on deleted and partial versions should be attempted as soon as possible.

It is astonishing how many people undertaking a life's work, the Great American Novel, a thesis ..., do not make regular backups.

Do you open the files from another application like email client? In such case, the file is (usually read-only) saved in a temporary folder and then erased when you leave your application.
