OO 4.1.3 will not open only once in Mac Sierra 10.12

Post by dalec »

When I upgraded to Sierra, OO (an older version) was erratic. I then downloaded 4.1.3 and was able to run OO without trouble immediately after the download. But when I closed OO I was unable to reopen it. So I reinstalled OO and had the same experience. I did a restart on the Mac, but was still unable to reopen OO. I reinstalled OO 4.1.3 again and could open it, but only once. The Mac is a Macbook Pro, early 2011. I have read much of the thread on this topic, and tried a few fixes, but without success. Any ideas.

Hi and welcome to the forum!

See if that (long) topic helps: [Solved] OpenOffice crashes on Mac OS Sierra.

Please add [Solved] at the beginning of the title in your first post (top of the topic) with the edit button if your issue has been fixed.

Thanks for the reply. I have read most of the posts in the topic that you mention, but nothing seems to be definitive. When OO quits working for me, I cannot get it to come up again from any location, not from the Apple apps folder, nor from any file previously created using OO, nor from any "restart" button. But it will work once, immediately following a fresh install, no matter from what location I open a document. By once, I mean that it will work until OO is shut down. Until then, I can open, edit, close, create, save, etc. documents and spreadsheets. There are no problems with graphics, so far as I can tell. But, as soon as I close the freshly installed OO, by whatever means, I cannot reopen it. I get its icon bouncing in the Apple programs bar for a few seconds, then the icon disappears and I get the "OO quit" message asking what I want to do. It seems as though quitting OO disables something in it that it needs to start again. I cannot tell if OO does it to itself, or if the Apple shut down or restart process is to blame.

Hopefully, this description of the problem will trigger someone's realization of what is happening and how to fix it.

Have you actually installed Apache OpenOffice from the .dmg file you downloaded?

No to both. That is, not specifically. I will check the Apple version of Java 6 tomorrow. Ditto, hopefully, with my user profile. For the latter, I presume you mean with Apache. I have not found any log in or other info in my files about an OO or Apache user profile. I am just an end user of OO, not a developer. If I need to reset something, I guess I need help.

Thanks for the suggestions.

AOO 4.1.3 requires Java 6 to be installed. Update to Sierra removes it from your computer. See this thread: viewtopic.php?f=17&t=85216#p396960

1. I installed the Apple Version of Java 6 successfully, and tried to use OO. It would not come up. I then restarted my computer, and tried to use OO. OO would not come up. Multiple tries, from various locations. All I got was the "OO quit unexpectedly" box. I reinstalled OO from the disc image that I am keeping on my desktop. As usual, OO installed successfully and started. I loaded several documents successfully. Then I quit OO. As usual, I could not reopen it. Again, multiple tries from various locations. So, problem remains unchanged.

2. I reset my user profile, using the procedure described on the link that you gave me. To do this, I had to again reinstall OO, because the installed version would not start and give me a new user profile. But when I reinstalled, I was able to create a new profile by starting the newly installed version (obtained again from the disc on my desktop). When I quit OO, with the new profile in place, I was unable to reopen. Exactly the same problem as for all my other tries. Problem remains unchanged.

Summary: The newly installed versions all start once, but never again.

3. As to the steps.

a. Using Chrome, I went to Apache Open Office - Official Site Download. This gave me www.openoffice.org/download/. I clicked on the download full installation for OSX (version >=10.7) (DMG). This downloaded the DMG to my desktop from pilotfiber.dl.sourceforge.net. Before doing the installation, I renamed the version of OO already in my applications folder to Open Office.old. From that point I went through the standard Apple installation by opening the DMG and dragging the OO program to the image of my Applications folder in the install box. When this was complete, I simply double clicked the new version of OO to verify and install it. Then I put the old version in the trash. I have now done these same steps multiple times, including downloading from Apache more than once.

I really appreciate all the help you are offering me. What next? Any ideas?

What is the complete content of the error message box? Or just post a screenshot of it.

Thanks for the crash report. I was hoping you had a different error message since deciphering Apple's crash reports are beyond my abilities.

Do you have Java 8 from Oracle installed as well as Apple legacy Java 6?

Your signature indicates that you are using a 2011 15" MacBook Pro. There is another solution that is specific to 2015 iMacs but, if I recall correctly, it solved the problem for one MacBook Pro user. It requires changing the colour profile of your monitor. See this post: viewtopic.php?f=17&t=85216&p=398844#p398844

Also, when you do get AOO to open, on the menubar go to OpenOffice/Preferences/OpenOffice/Java and enable Java.

1. Re: Crash report. I have no idea what it means either.

2. Re: Color fix. I tried that also, but to no effect.

3. Re: Java. To check this item, I just reinstalled. Java runtime environment is checked. But I only see one Item already installed. That is Oracle 1.8.0 111. So, I guess that means that Java 8 is there. But, should I see Java 6? I installed it on the computer. Where would I find it?

Good. That is the latest version of Java. Seeing it also means Java 6 is installed. AOO can't find the newer versions of Java unless the legacy Java 6 is installed.

Java 6 is located at /Library/Java/JavaVirtualMachines/
Java 8 JDK is also there. I you only have Java 8 JRE it might only be found at /Library/Internet Plug-ins
The path is listed below the window showing which JRE is checked.

Sorry I don't have any more suggestions, although you could go back to AOO 4.1.2 or 4.1.1 and see if they work.

Thanks again to those of you who gave me advice and ideas about how to deal with this problem. Although we never found the cause, nor found an answer that allows me to use OO 4.1.3 normally, I did find a workaround of sorts (just reinstall every time I need OO following computer or OO shutdown) that will keep me going with fairly minor annoyance until, hopefully, the next release is better. Is there a way to pass this experience along to the developer community, so that they know there is an unsolved problem lurking in 4.1.3 for at least one Apple user? Presumably they check this forum regularly. At this point, I am abandoning further efforts to solve. For the record, I could not get 4.1.1 started at all in my machine and did not try 4.1.2.

Shouldn't affect your workaround. One iMac user said it solved his problem with AOO.

I've been using it since it came out with no problems.

Larry,

After the usual minor tribulations, I got Sierra 10.12.1 up and running OK. Seems I always have to restart several times following a Mac operating system change or upgrade before the system settles down and performs adequately.

But, there was no improvement whatsoever for OO 4.1.3. I still just get one use following a reinstall and then the installed OO will not start again.

Regards and thanks again.

I have exactly the same problem that dalec describes in this thread. I'm also running macOS Sierra (10.12.1) on a MacBook Pro (15-inch, Early 2011).

I have a little bit of additional info: I tested the last few versions of AOO under Sierra 10.12.1:
  • 4.1.1 - works ok
    4.1.2 - works ok
4.1.3 - works only once and crashes thereafter, as described above by dalec
I've tried the suggestions in this thread, and also in the other longer thread viewtopic.php?f=17&t=85216, but nothing has helped me.

I've moved back to AOO 4.1.2 as a workaround for now.

Hope this helps!

Encouraged by BradC's post, I installed OO4.1.2 on my computer. At first it would not open. Then I checked my System Display Color preferences and I believe, got them successfully changed to "Generic RGB". (I thought that I had accomplished this change earlier, but now believe I did not.) At that point I could open OO4.1.2.

I then did a number of tests, most of which resulted in a successful opening of 4.1.2. However, not always. Seemingly at random, perhaps on a little less than about 1/3 of the tries, OO failed to open. A retry or two would frequently bring it around. Once it was open, there were no problems using any of the files. I did not have to reinstall 4.1.2.

So, while my experience with 4.1.2 does not appear to be as good as BradC's, 4.1.2 is certainly better than 4.1.3 on my computer.

I'm having the same issues since updating to Sierra 10.12.1. OO starts with new download but will not start again after that first time. As per BradC's suggestion, I will go back to OO 4.1.2 and wait for a fix.
