I know that Options is under Preferences in OS X, but in options I cannot find "Formatting Aids Options". Specifically I want to display paragraph ends in my document.
The Formatting Aids Option is further down in the list under "Open Office Writer"

It should be in the Writer section.

That option should be on by default. You also have to turn on View > Nonprinting Characters.
