[Solved] Cannot launch open office on Mac

Hi - can anyone help?

I've downloaded Open Office 2.4, put it in my applications folder - (I'm on 10.5.5 and have X11) - when I click on the icon to launch programme the following happens -

X11 launches
Open Office hangs, then times out and I have to perform a Force Quit to get rid of it.

So in short I cannot launch open office successfully.

All advice/assistance very much appreciated- thanks!

Hopefully, one of the Mac users here can give you some more specific help, but in the meantime, here's my two cents.

You might want to try the newest version of OOo, 3.0, and not worry about the older 2.4. OOo 3 is a huge improvement over 2.4 in support of the Mac platform. I assume that installation with 3.0 will be smoother as well, since X11 is no longer required.

I say "might," because the new version has some serious bugs on the Mac, but it is still usable. A bug fix release for OOo 3 is due in a few weeks.

I would recommend installing OO.o 3.0, available here:

There are problems with the X11 that comes with Leopard. There are solutions to get OO.o to work on OS 10.5.xx — see the link to another thread below. You didn't state which version of OO.o 2.4. you installed. 2.4.2 is the latest and may not require the script hack mentioned in the link below. I have not tested it, but I did get OO.o 2.4.1 to work on Leopard as detailed in the link below.

I should have mentioned - I'm on the power pc version of the G4 Powerbook - as far as I can tell only version 2.4.0 is available to me - and this is what I am having problems with....

OO.o 3.0 for PPCs is available from the good-day site.
