Laggy video performance

I am having problems with video performance when using OpenOffice. This has been the case for some time but it is getting much worse, to the point where scrolling through a template or worksheet is almost impossible. Higher resolution video settings seem to make this worse. I have an older MacBook Air and the documents scroll well. But on my other machines, with significantly higher screen resolutions, the scrolling is very laggy and frustrating. Changing the screen resolution does not seem to make any difference, and changing the worksheet magnification also does not seem to improve anything.

I do not claim to be all that experienced with OpenOffice and would appreciate any suggestions offered to help improve my problem. It's gotten to the point where the templates are unusable, and I'm thinking about transitioning to Apple Numbers. Which I really do not want to do.
