[Solved] OO 2.4 Fails to Launch

Post by contrazz »

It also leaves the OS in a sorry state after the failure. Everything crawls at a snail's pace.

OO 2.4 with OS 10.5.5.
I recently completely installed a new system and updates on a new drive in this computer. I then installed a fresh copy of OO. It hasn't worked since. On launch, I get the error message "command timed out" and a console message from X11: bash-3.2$. I then have to force-quit OO, though I can quit X11 normally.

My installation on the previous disk drive worked fine. I believe it was OO 2.3x.

Console log from recent crash:

Please see if your issue has not been discussed already there are plenty of such threads in this very Mac forum!

Thanks to add '[Solved]' at beginning of your first post title (edit button) if your issue has been fixed.

Thank you for your reply.
I did, in fact, do several searches before posting. I used very broad search terms in the searches, such as "2.4 crash mac", "2.4 leak mac", and "2.4 failed mac". I just did a few more, and still didn't discover any posts that seem to address my installation's issue - though they may be out there. Since you seem to know of several, perhaps you could point me to one, or suggest a search term I may have overlooked.

If my problem is ever solved, I will be pleased to post it. Given the symptoms, it seems likely that it will persist in failing until I install 3.0.

Simple solution: Install OO.o 3.0 http://download.openoffice.org/680/index.html

All you had to do was read the thread topics on the first page of "Board index ‹ Getting started ‹ Setup and Troubleshooting ‹ Mac OSX". Here are a few of them.

Can't start OOo 2.4 http://user.services.openoffice.org/en/ ... 17&t=10229
OpenOffice won't open in Mac OSX 10.5.5 http://user.services.openoffice.org/en/ ... 17&t=10225

I'm marking this solved, though it really isn't.
Upgrade to version 3 appears to be the fix.
Since the public version 3 isn't yet ready,
I may go back to NeoOffice for a while.

I must say ...
I'm kinda surprised at the "hands-on-hips" tone I'm detecting here. No one else in the posts I read described operating system difficulties of the sort I encountered. Though I didn't bother to get into gruesome detail, the Finder was crippled enough that clicking the desktop failed to bring it forward. I couldn't invoke the Force Quit gadget. It took more than an hour shutting my OS down - one app at a time. Quitting my email client, for instance, took about 10 minutes. When I launched it next, I had database damage. The problem I described - and for which I supplied evidence - includes an OS which has been brought to its knees, replicably, By OO. It was a console dump I frankly thought someone might want to have look at. If you knew about all these issues already, my apologies for bothering. In the mean time, please ease up.

You're welcome for solving your problems. One of the threads I linked to provided the solution to getting 2.4.1 working on Leopard.
http://user.services.openoffice.org/en/ ... =17&t=8198

I recently reinstalled OO.o 2.4.1 X11 on Mac OS 10.5.5, following the procedure I outlined in the above thread to see if it still worked after multiple reports of problems caused by the update to OS 10.5.5, without any problems. I still recommend using OO.o 3.0 instead. I have been using it for months. The final release will be out in a couple of weeks.

You never mentioned all your other system problems. Sounds operating system related to me. I'm not that good at reading console errors.

I had some serious problem caused by OS 10.5.5 leading to system lockups with 100% CPU usage. It didn't take an hour to shut down, I just held down the start button.

Countless people have reported the same problem (without the console dump) with OO.o 2.4.1 on OS 10.5.5 that it gets a little redundant answering the same question again when the answer has been given multiple time. Makes one question continuing volunteering to give support to other users of OO.o.

If one has open databases, and one simply holds down the start button, one risks damaging one's data. Much better to let it (or in this case, coax it) and the apps to close their files and shut down nicely if they possibly can. I'd much rather babysit it for an hour than risk a day's work.

It's a very fresh install of the OS that has not had problems (yet) except when I've attempted to run OO. That doesn't mean there isn't something wrong - maybe there is. Corruption creeps in. In fact, it often creeps in when an app scrambles its brain.

By the way, my Mac has a PowerMac processor, so I apparently can't use 2.4.1. Only 2.4.0 is available on the download page. This is something I probably should have mentioned, since 2.4.0 for an Intel Mac is a different piece of software from the PowerMac version. One of the reasons I didn't take some of the reports as being equivalent to mine. I confess I haven't yet gotten accustomed to the idea that I have to mention my processor to help someone understand what software I'm running. **sigh**

Important point. OO.o 2.4.1 and OO.o 3.0 Release Candidate for PPC Macs are available from the Good-Day server (link below). Sun only provides builds for Intel Macs ( they do not have any PPC machines to build on). Note: The US English builds do not have _en-US in the file name. The file name for OO.o RC3 PPC is "OOo_3.0.0rc3_MacOSXPowerPC_install.dmg"
