Installing OpenOffice on a Mac PPC

I am not a computer person. I am trying to download Open Office to my Mac PPC, OS X 10.5.4. I am not finding it easy to do. I have downloaded the .dmg thing. I double clicked on the .dmg thing and an OpenOffice.org window came up. It has a Licenses folder, a Readmes folder and a strange looking wide gray box at the bottom that has OpenOffice.org 2.4, two seagulls with a white arrow and plus sign going through them, and an application folder. I double clicked on the OpenOffice.org 2.4 icon and a coffee cup icon started bouncing on my dock and then it would disappear. The coffee cup incident happened a couple of times. I can not tell if OpenOffice is installed or not. What am I supposed to do?

A meaningful title for posts helps others who are searching for solutions. Nearly everyone needs help who posts here. Please edit your thread title by editing your first post and don't use all caps.

You could also try a search for "Mac" — you will find several threads on this problem such as this one. Sorry I cannot help as I am using Windows.

You obviously do not know how to install applications on a Mac (I'd suggest getting a good basic book on Macs). You drag the icon that has "OpenOffice.org 2.4.app" below it to the icon that has "Applications" below it.

There are problems getting OO.o 2.4 to work on Leopard. Rather than trying to apply the fixes I would suggest you install OO.o 3.0. The release candidates are out now, final version in a couple of weeks. Here is the link to the latest version. Note: the US English versions do not have _en-US in the file name.

Unfortunately, that won't help the OP at present.

Currently OO.o 3.0 is an Intel-only download. As a fellow PPC user, I'm hoping that it will someday be a Universal Binary, but as it stands now... :(

...And to be fair, Larry, not all OS X applications drag-and-drop to install; based on your response I could guess that you "obviously" never installed Adobe CS. ;)

Not true. PPC builds are available from good-day. I gave the link before but here it is again. Universal Binary packages would unnecessarily increase an already large download. Besides, Sun only builds for Intel Macs since they have no PPC Macs to build on.

Drag-and-drop is the standard installation method. Some companies like Adobe insist on using other methods.

Ah! I was (rather obviously)unaware of that -- the regular OO.o download page for v.3 only lists the Intel version.

Thanks for the link; the program seems to work quite nicely and no more X11!Yay!

What version of OS X are you using? If you are using 10.4.xx or 10.5.xx download the following:

It is also available for PPCs from the good-day server, as has been mentioned on other threads on this forum. Click the link I gave you to get the US English version.

this thread is super helpful. totally solved it. ppc with leopard, couldn't open at all! 3.0 solved the problem.
