OpenOffice/LibreOffi Crashes on Mavericks Macbook Pro Retina
Hello there,
So I downloaded Openoffice from this website (but wasn't able to see which version it is exactly) and the moment I try to open any document (so far I've only tried with word docs exported from Pages 5 or from Microsoft Word 201) it crashes. The same EXACT thing happens when I install LibreOffice. I can't seem to open any document.
I have a Macbook Pro Retina running Mavericks.

I installed it twice, and each time I removed the program because I couldn't open a single document without it crashing.

hi - yep, i have similar experience with OpenOffice software on Apple OS Mavericks:
Openoffice 4.0.1 takes 30 seconds to load (to the front !!!!. Tried re-installing. makes no difference, forced to use Apple apps.
Pages takes 4 to 5 seconds
Thunderbird is great - still loading in around 5 seconds - so i don't have to use Apple Mail
Mozilla firefox (latest version) is often freezing soon after loading - causing whole macbook pro to freeze n need reboot. Forced to use Safari.
Seems like Open Office software needs to look closely at Mavericks - I suspect Apple are up to something here.

I think many are successful using AOO on Mavericks. I've seen AOO 3.4.1 running there. Can you reproduce the difficulty using the Mac's Guest account (described in your Mac's Help system)? If not, and AOO works fine on the Guest account, you need a new user profile for the account you normally use so read Reset the user profile.DOMinKL wrote:Openoffice 4.0.1 takes 30 seconds to load (to the front !!!!. Reinstalling will not get you a new profile. You must follow the instructions in the link above.DOMinKL wrote:Tried re-installing.
How wonderful for you!DOMinKL wrote:Thunderbird is great - still loading in around 5 seconds - so i don't have to use Apple Mail
A Mozilla problem is not relevant to an Open Office forum except that it suggests that the root cause of your trouble with AOO is something other than AOO. Research your browser problem on Mozilla or Apple forums.DOMinKL wrote:Mozilla firefox (latest version) is often freezing soon after loading - causing whole macbook pro to freeze n need reboot.
Dude, if you don't want to use any of the Apple applications, why did you buy a Mac?DOMinKL wrote:forced to use Apple … Pages

Forced to use [Apple] Safari.

I'm now having the same problem with LibreOffice although I've noticed that it will actually open some documents but NONE that have been exported from Pages 5. Starting to think Pages 5 is the culprit...
What is AOO??
I bought Macbook Pro to use both Apple and non Apple products. I too feel like more and more the only things that work well on MacBooks are Apple products.

AOO is shorthand for Apache OpenOffice (3.4 - 4.0.1); OOo refers to the earlier versions (1.x-3.3.x).

Do you think Apache OpenOffice is better than LibreOffice? I'm not liking LibreOffice too much, especially compared to Microsoft Word. And I'm still trying to figure out how to A. prevent LO from crashing when I open documents exported from Pages and B. upload these documents into my DropBox account online and be able to have the preview...something which can't be done with Word Docs exported from Pages 5.
What an EFFIN nightmare! Never thought I'd miss Microsoft Word...

I use AOO 4.0.1 (and previous versions), mostly for writing - several long works in progress (200/300 pages and longer)- three or four 60 min presentations per year and some trivial spreadsheet work. I find it very stable, whether on Xubuntu/Ubuntu or Windows 2000/XP..
If you wish MS Word, just rush out and purchase it. I haven't missed it since I started using OpenOffice. I haven't tried LibreOffice other than trivially, as OpenOffice meets my needs for functionality and stability.

But it seems like for some people on Macbook 10.9 it's not so stable while for others it is. I had the same issue with Openoffice as I do now with LibreOffice, but it obviously has something to do with Pages. So once that's resolved maybe I'll try AOO...
Anyways thanks for the tip...

I've been doing some testing. Files exported as .docx from Pages 5 always crash AOO 4.01, AOO 3.4.1, and LO 4.1.3.
Files exported as .doc from Pages 5 open properly. The few .docx files I have received that were created in Word open properly.
If you are exporting from Pages 5, create .doc files instead of .docx files.
