I have successfully installed OpenOffice on my Manjaro Linux Deepin.
But when I try to run

Code: Select all

openoffice4
to open I get this error:

I have made a report of the same issue to the Manjaro Linux Forum. You can find that issue in https://forum.manjaro.org/t/openoffice-run-error/88238 (it has the full history of the things I have made).

Need help to make OpenOffice run in my system.

Thank you

Have you tried on Manjaro XFCE or Mate? I have AOO 4.1.6 installed from AUR on Manjaro Mate and it starts with no errors. I was going to try Manjaro Deepin at one time, but I couldn't establish a WIFI connection after starting from the live USB stick so I gave up on it.

Thank you Bill for your reply.

No, I haven't tried on XFCE or Mate. I really don't want to install other DE since I won't be using those. I'm happy with Deepin DE. Also I have limited space in my 128GB SSD.

Since you are a Manjaro User can you please tell me all the steps you did to install OpenOffice, so that I can replicate on my Manjaro system?

Thank you

Like any other distro, Manjaro comes with LibreOffice.

Thank you for that information Villeroy but I already have noticed.
My goal is to make a personal comparation of using both LibreOffice and OpenOffice and then CHOOSE which one I like to keep.

A bleeding edge distribution may or may not run a 10 year old binary. OpenOffice is very difficult to compile because of its organically grown zoo of dependencies. LibreOffice has changed the whole production tool set. They made it far easier to compile their product on all platforms.

Are you saying that OpenOffice has staled?

That is not what this article, release 18-11-2018, seems to suggest https://blogs.apache.org/OOo/entry/anno ... ffice-4-12 . They even say it works on Linux, so I'm assuming they are keeping up with the new Linux's systems. So if you are calling OpenOffice a "10 year old binary" it seems inappropriate. Plus, the OpenOffice team probably is (or should be) updating (or using new similar updated versions) of OpenOffice dependencies.

My main reason to insist on this, is because I really dislike LibreOffice GUI, while the OpenOffice GUI was (the last time I used it) more appealing to me in comparison.

Please give me solutions that are not "use other software". That is not why I registered on an OpenOffice forum. I'm looking for OpenOffice related solutions.

On the linux distros I use (Xubuntu), before installing OpenOffice, which I use in preference to LibreOffice, I uninstall the system provided LibreOffice. In my case that is by

Code: Select all

sudo apt purge libreoffice*
The final "*" is important. This removes some cross talk from LibreOffice.

Syntax for such removal from Manjaro may be different.

Thank you RoryOF.

On my Manjaro system, the only LibreOffice related package that I have installed is libcdr (CorelDraw file format importer library for LibreOffice) that I cannot uninstall because it is a dependency of Scribus, being Scribus a program that I need.

So, do you have any other ideas that I might use?

You could test this way: make a bootable USB key using say Xubuntu, with persistence. Install LibreOfice from the Xubuntu sources and try it out. Then purge libreoffice (as I have suggested above) and install OpenOffice: complete your evaluation. It may be that you wil decide on libreoffice, in which case you can install it from the Manjaro sources and not have to worry about getting Openffice to run on Manjaro.

The screens of Open- and Libre-Office should be identical across linux distros.

Thank you RoryOF for your concern.

I actually am pretty motivated to not use LibreOffice because GUI is very important to me (and I believe for most users too). A good GUI (and an associate good performance) makes the perception that the software is good (or at least there was a good effort into making that the user experience is enjoyable). LibreOffice's is very very ugly. Ughhh... I cannot recommend any Windows-bounded-user to ditch cracked Microsoft Office and use LibreOffice, being this the case. I cannot bear they saying "but it looks so ugly".
Well the same way I cannot recommend any recent Linux user (that came from Windows) to use LibreOffice because it is so ugly, and probably will make them think "why did I came to Linux?".

OpenOffice GUI was acceptable, in my terms, and I am going towards it in order to be able to give the best graphical user experience to the persons that trust me to migrate them from Windows to Linux (and also the people that want to go from closed source apps into open source apps, in the case of Windows users).

So I need to experience OpenOffice in Manjaro Deepin, in particular, for me to feel the appearance/look (which varies from DE to DE) and performance.

Right now, I perceive LibreOffice as a bad experience (mainly because of its graphics) for me to get out of.

LibreOffice and OpenOffice UI makers could look at the graphical job made by WPS Office.
WPS Office is pleasent, what I call good graphics.

Some learning can be made by WPS Office product

I found a solution to my WIFI problem with Manjaro Deepin and installed OpenOffice from the AUR using the Package Manager while running Manjaro Deepin on a live USB stick. I did not install any other programs (Java, etc) or remove LibreOffice. After the installation completed, I opened a terminal and used the command "openoffice4" to start OpenOffice. the only error messages were related to some themes which could not be found, but AOO did start and seemed to work normally.

Did you install OpenOffice using the Package Manager in Manjaro or did you use some command in the terminal?

The best thing that I could do in LibreOffice to look better, was to change:
1. View > User Interface > Tabbed
2. Tools > Options then LibreOffice > View and change Icon style to one that pleases you most.

I'm a bit happier.

And OpenOffice look and LibreOffice look might have been very similar in the same OS (I did a bit of web search to view both), so I'm sticking to LibreOffice with this Appearence/Look settings.

Thank you all
