4.1.6 Install Failure

Post by CaptainMidnight »

I am trying to install on CentOS 7 64-bit OpenOffice version 4.1.6.

I got the wrong Apache OpenOffice download file the first time - i586 instead of x86_64.

Had some errors and then saw the 64-bit was available. I uninstalled the i586 version and double checked and found no files nor rpm packages left installed.

Now when I try to install 4.1.6 ... x86_64 it fails with a number of lines, each listing subdirectory path and a file in non-existent directory - /opt/openoffice4/...
The message for each line is:

file /opt/openoffice4/subdir/filename conflicts between attempted installs of openoffice-en_US_base-4.1.6-9790.x86_64 and openoffice-en-US-base-4.1.6-9790.i586

(example subdir/filenames:
...program/unopkg.bin.bin conflicts between attempted installs of openoffice-en_US_base-4.1.6-9790.x86_64 and openoffice-en-US-base-4.1.6-9790.i586
...help/en/sdatabase.ht conflicts between attempted installs of openoffice-en_US_base-4.1.6-9790.x86_64 and openoffice-en-US-base-4.1.6-9790.i586

and many more, all under /opt/openoffice4 - which does not exist

I double checked for any files left from previous install and also references to openoffice in all files that were accessed during the attempted install of x86_64 version.

I found only one file referencing the openoffice software - plasma-desktop-appletsrc :
openoffice4-base=2019-03-17
openoffice4-calc=2019-03-17
openoffice4-writer=2019-03-17
8 lines total
...
Removed these lines. Still same error.

Any ideas?

Thank you!

As far as I have found, there is no Apache OpenOffice package available in a repository easily accessible to CentOS, so your downloaded package is the way to go if you can't use the distro managed LibreOffice package.

It's been a while, but if I recall correctly you need to be root (su command) to install. For some reason, sudo will often fail. This may be true for uninstall too.

As CentOS is somewhat "hardened", you may need additional steps to activate functionality which relies on external resources, e.g. java or connecting to mail server (for e-mailmerge).

See these guides:

Good luck!
