OOO crashes with PCLinuxOS

Not all the time, but irregularly. It started when I call the dropdown list of fonts in either writer or calc. Now I find that a macro in Sun basic to print a few foreign characters from the keyboard that I have been using for about 15 years also fails. (I didn't write it, but found it in an earlier version of this forum.)

Now it occasionally freezes up without any apparent reason in both applications. I can reload and repeat the same operation without the same problem. It happens with both of my computers running the same systems.

I think it's something to do with recent "upgrades" to PCLinuxOS, and probably one of the dependencies like Java or Perl - but I don't know enough to determine which. They all seem to be up to date.

I know I could try LibreOffice, but I'm used to the vanilla version after nearly 20 years and I'm kind of used to OOO with all its wrinkles. I have had problems when trying LibreOffice with some older versions of a botanical magazine that I edit.

Any suggestions?

Start it from a terminal to see if there are any helpful messages: type openoffice4 in the terminal.

Thanks Rory.

All I get is:-
/etc/host.conf: line 3: bad command `nospoof on'
/etc/host.conf: line 4: bad command `spoofalert on'

And OOO opens as usual.
