I suggest, at root level, remove libreoffice* (note the *). On a deb based machine this is "sudo apt purge libreoffice*" (no quotes). I cannot say what the exact syntax is for openSUSE. Then try to install OO once again.

From your answer it seams that the question is either or not both? (libre and open-office)

It is possible to run both side by side. I find OO is completely stable on my computers and answers my needs, so I have never run both side by side and cannot, without searching, tell you how this is done, although I know it is possible.

Our last posts crossed - you can install either or both; I have never installed both and remove traces of libreoffice so that my OpenOffice installs without problems. Someone who knows how will doubtless tell you how to install side by side - I think it is a matter of adjusting one file, but am not certain.

Yes that was my intention too. And as you see the problem is that the installation file
openoffice4.1.5-suse-menus-4.1.5-9789.noarch.rpm
does't find the /etc/SuSE-release file although the cat shows a file with content ....
".. is needed" suggests that the file isn't in place.....
could this be some problem with the content in the file???

Hopefully some more users meets the same problem..... :)
