Not being a Linux user, I'm just going to make some suggestions based on posts I can recall reading.
1) Does your Linux version contain a built in (pre-installed?) version of LibreOffice? If so, then this has been known to cause difficulties. I don't recall if the difficulties were with other attempts to install later versions of LibreOffice or if it also affected OpenOffice
2) Is there a reason why you are still using 3.2.1? That is a very old version, and updated versions might work better.
2a) If you are using a later version of OpenOffice, please update your forum signature, and edit your post to reflect the correct version of OpenOffice.

If neither of these is applicable, then we'll have to wait for another Linux user to make suggestions.

That version of DeadRatRedHat came out around September 2009 - probably time for an upgrade.

I echo robleyd's advice; both the version of OpenOffice and the version of RedHat are old: probably time for an upgrade. It is unlikely that there will be any support for code modifications in OO3 as it is so old.

I have had no problems running OpenOffice (versions 2.4 - 4.1.3) on the then current versions of Xubuntu. In linux a normal way to faultfind OpenOffice is to open a terminal and in it type openoffice3 (or openoffice4, as appropriate) to start OpenOffice; one may get some faultfinding information.
