First point; I'm so used to being root that I forgot "SU", second will this or other guides work with the newest?

If the conversion from the RPM is still valid, then it should work.
Worth trying, just to see.

Please add [Solved] at the beginning of the title in your first post (top of the topic) with the edit button if your issue has been fixed.

See my sig :-) Convert rpms, install with pkgtool and you are good to go (Java problems aside, but that is another can of worms)

I've continued this from a PM so that others who may have a similar issue are able to find this discussion. Apologies for the delay in replying - I've been away from my computer and unable go get some info I needed for this reply.
Unpacked "Apache_OpenOffice_4.1.3_Linux_x86-64_install-rpm_en-US.tar.gz"
It created "en-US"
You mean I've got to go into "RPMS" and convert each one then install each one?

Which can I delete or ignore:

openoffice-xsltfilter-4.1.3-9783.x86_64.rpm
It is pretty much as simple as it sounds; convert and install. You will want all of the files in the RPMS directory; in addition you might want the extra step of selecting a desktop file from the desktop-integration sub-directory if you want to put shortcuts to AOO modules (writer, calc etc) on your desktop. If so, copy openoffice4.1.3-freedesktop-menus-4.1.3-9783.noarch.tgz into the RPMS directory and you can work with all the installation files in one process.

Next, convert the rpms to Slackware installation files. From within the RPMS directory use

Code: Select all

rpm2tgz *.rpm
which will convert all the rpms in that directory to tgz install files.

Then, either vi sudo or as root, still within the RPMS directory

Code: Select all

pkgtool
and select install packages from current directory; confirm each package when prompted. Installation done.

This if you are using KDE as window manager and want to use the Kickoff App Launcher to start your AOO modules: I can't recall whether a fresh install of AOO adds items to the Kickoff Launcher - you may have to do this yourself via right click on the Launcher "K" icon. If you have another window manager in place, you may need to check its docs for how to add menu items.
Cheers

What, and how, are you trying to launch?

Have you added items to the Kickoff menus, or added the desktop icon?

Is 'that' the desktop icon, or the launcher? What have you done to try and get whatever it is to function correctly?

You need to provide some detail to allow us to help you :D

First up, are any of the AOO applications in the Launcher menu? Look under Applications|Office. If they are there you can start them with a click; you can also add them either to your favourites on the Launcher list, or to your desktop, by right click on the application menu item in Applications|Office.

If they aren't in the launcher, add them by right click on the K icon, select Edit Applications, navigate to where you want them to appear (presumably under Office?) and use New item to add them. You've noticed that the executable files are in /opt/openoffice4/program; swrite (writer), scalc (calc) and so forth.

As a workaround, you can also use the custom desktop file, see: [Solved] Both OpenOffice & LibreOffice on same installation.

But the desktop-integration package should have taken care of that. Are you sure you installed it?

Well, thanks to' robleyd'

It is pretty much as simple as it sounds; convert and install. You will want all of the files in the RPMS directory; in addition you might want the extra step of selecting a desktop file from the desktop-integration sub-directory if you want to put shortcuts to AOO modules (writer, calc etc) on your desktop. If so, copy openoffice4.1.3-freedesktop-menus-4.1.3-9783.noarch.tgz into the RPMS directory and you can work with all the installation files in one process.

Next, convert the rpms to Slackware installation files. From within the RPMS directory use

rpm2tgz *.rpm

which will convert all the rpms in that directory to tgz install files.

Then, either vi sudo or as root, still within the RPMS directory

CODE: SELECT ALL EXPAND VIEW
pkgtool

and select install packages from current directory; confirm each package when prompted.
