[Solved] Generic printer (Ubuntu)

Post by degenaro »

I have LO 4.2.8.2 on ubuntu 14.04. I am able to print fine from other applications and even from LO Writer...but only sometimes!?

I seem to have an issue when I try using database in form letter. The printer icon hover says "Print File Directly (Generic Printer). When I click, a dialog prompts for "Your document contains address database fields. Do you want to print a form letter?" If I select yes, then try to print or save to file nothing results. But if I say no, then the document prints but w/o the field substitutions.

What am I missing?

Thanks.

Lou.

Can you print anything else from another program?

At a quick glance, it would appear that Ubuntu is not recognizing your printer. If I try to print from Ubuntu 16.04 I get a screen asking me to confirm which printer I want to use. Is your printer name appearing? If not you may need to install new print drivers for it.

I have found an answer to my own question, though it seems like a hack to the uninitiated.

1. click the icon in the upper right of your menu bar
2. select System Settings...
3. click printers
4. right click on Printer icon and select Set As Default
5. Writer should now be able to locate a printer and print

Could've been friendlier IMHO.

Printers and web settings seem mean by design.

Sorry I read your original post while making breakfast and missed that you could print from other programs
