I've used Ubuntu and Ubuntu variations for years; I've now standardised in Xubuntu, which is a personal choice as I like a very simple desktop. Make your linux choice based on which one you like best; OpenOffice should run on all, provided you use the correct installer (which varies according to linux distro)

You don't need to install OpenOffice. Almost every distribution of Linux comes with https://libreoffice.org/ pre-installed or installable with a few clicks. For Linux beginners LibreOffice is better than OpenOffice because it supports more foreign file formats.

Note that, if one (or the OP) only wishes to run OpenOffice, there is no need to change operating systems. There is a version of OpenOffice that will install and run on Windows 7/8/10.

I have no problem installing and running both Apache OpenOffice and LibreOffice (concurrently) on openSUSE 13.2.
