[Solved] Trouble installing OpenOffice 4.1.1 in Ubuntu 14.04

I've seen that I'm not the first to run into trouble trying to install OO 4.1.1 in Ubuntu. I've been trying to do this on and off for two days. I've followed instructions from several tutorials. Everytime my laptop goes through the process of trying to install but then the install fails. Here's the output from my terminal window:

I was hoping to install Open Office, not Libre Office. In fact, I've removed Libre Office. Here's what my terminal says when I try to install Open Office 4.1.1.

Code: Select all

I'm noticing that when I get to the Desktop Integration folder and give the command "sudo dpkg -i *.deb" that an error occurs:
dpkg: error processing archive openoffice4.1-debian-menus_4.1.1-9775_all.deb (--install):
trying to overwrite '/usr/bin/soffice', which is also in package libreoffice-common 1:4.2.8-0ubuntu2

Could this have something to do with the problem? I've removed Libre Office already, and repeated the removal procedure numerous times -- each time getting confirmation that the program is removed already.

I'm learning Linux in fits and starts. Since I have Ubuntu, things mostly happen smoothly. But when I have to open a terminal and use commands to install something, my lack of experience shows. I have other demanding commitments, so I don't really get familiar with Linux commands until I get in a bind like this. If you have information, please try to state it simply -- thanks.

You haven't removed all of LibreOffice. In a terminal type

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get purge libreoffice*
then reinstall OpenOffice.

Don't omit the * in the above terminal line.

Thanks for the help with the purge command. I followed instructions saying to use apt-get remove, apt-get autoremove, and apt-get purge but I don't remember any of them saying to add the asterisk to the end of libreoffice. That cleaned out the rest of the libre office files and OO installed easily!

Everybody thinks that asterisk is a typo, but it's not, so I mention it specifically in my instructions. Its purpose is as a wild card, meaning "all files starting with libreoffice and finishing with anything".

If you are not certain that you need OpenOffice specifically, use the inbuilt LibreOffice that comes with linux Mint; for most purposes you will notice no difference. Otherwise you have to use the command line and there will be about six distinct command line steps. Your choice.
