[Solved] Converting to PDF from Writer on Ubuntu Gutsy

Over the weekend, I upgraded my Ubuntu distribution from Feisty (7.04) to Gutsy (7.10). In the process, OOo went from [2.2?] to 2.3. I am now noticing a problem with creating PDFs.

In short: the created PDF is now an abnormally large file.

Details:

I have a two page Writer document that is 33.6kb. Before, in the previous version of OOo, it created a 66.4kb PDF from this document. Now, the same odt file creates a 562.1kb file!

I'm not sure what's causing this, but I will mention one thing I noticed that might be related: I don't seem to have all fonts installed; for example "Times New Roman" is being substituted. The large PDF has embedded fonts.

I hope someone has a solution to this, as it could be a major problem. I have to regularly convert documents to PDF for upload to the web. the 562kb file is too big, especially for only 2 pages, no graphics.

Thanks in advance.

OOo embedds almost all TrueType fonts into PDF files. Only fonts like Helvetica, Times, Courier and some other are not embedded. Which fonts are you using in your odt document? Install them and try again. Or try to used Helvetica and Times and see if that changes the file size. But keep in mind that Times New Roman is not Times (although they are similar), so Times New Roman will be embedded. Same with Helvetica/Arial and Courier/Courier New (first will be embedded, second not).

I will check further on the fonts when I get home. But is that why the PDF file size is so large?

In the example I quoted, the original ODT document had "Times New Roman." As I said, the PDF in 2.3 is huge compared to what it was before.

What font in OOo is comparable to standard Times New Roman in Microsoft Word?

Install the msttcorefonts package (in Synaptic).

I've noticed that when a font is not available on the system, the PDF file resulting is abnormally huge. If you confirm that behavior, perhaps a bug report could be worth filing.

Thanks to add '[Solved]' in your first post title (edit button) if your issue has been fixed.

Thank you, Hagar, installing

Code: Select all

msttcorefonts
that worked. Now the created pdf is down to a reasonable 105kb. I can live with that!
(I also added tables to the odt file, so the increase in kb is to be expected.)
