In this case, the peripheral is just another hdd. The "device manager" recognizes the USB, but the USB cannot be put into use.

Does that only occur within OpenOffice, or for all applications?

Xandros 2 was released in 2003. Does it automount the USB drive?

There were a lot of fixes and upgrades done to Xandros when 3 was released, The current version, to my knowledge, is 4,
I'm running Xandros 4 as a dual boot on my Windows 7 system, and have 3 USB hard drives attached, all of which work fine under Windows and Xandros 4.
