Trouble installing

I first downloaded the .DEB package and installed it per the instructions on the website. However after installing there was nothing which appeared for me to run. I verified the install and the OPT folder but didn't find a softlink in the USR folders.

I noticed that the .DEB packaged had AMD in the file names so I thought I had the wrong package. I then downloaded the RPM package and followed the instructions to install. Again, the results showed failure as I had no way to start Apache Open Office.

I had installed this previously on Ubuntu and don't recall having problems. Could some one point me in the right direction?

AMD means that it is for 64 bit systems, whether Intel or AMD chipped. DEB means it is for Ubuntu/Debian based systems. For a 32 bit Ubuntu If you are using Windows 7, you need to download an .exe version. Make your selection from the dropdowns on
http://www.openoffice.org/download

For a 64 bit Ubuntu the file you need is named similar to
Apache_OpenOffice_4.1.1_Linux_x86-64_install-deb_en-GB.tar.gz
and for a 32 bit Ubuntu the file name is similar to
Apache_OpenOffice_4.1.1_Linux_x86_install-deb_en-GB.tar.gz
- the exact language tag will change.

I tried both 64 bit version and I'm not getting any success. It's strange because I've installed this before on Ubuntu and never had any problems. I must be missing something.

1) download files
2) unpack to temp folder
3) install using the commands given (for either .deb or .rpm
4) install desktop files
5) no errors during install
6) test Apache by opening it
7) can't open it because there is nothing to run

If you are using Ubuntu, the RPM file is no use to you. Your are missing one step in the install. After the first

sudo dpkg -i *.deb

you need to issue

cd desktop-integration
sudo dpkg -i *.deb

After this links to OpenOffice will show up in your Office folder.

Thanks for the reply but that didn't do it. Could it be something else? How can I verify the install? I didn't get any errors.

ok. i figured my install of ubuntu was bad because of some errors during install so i nuked the system and started from scratch. however i experienced the same results. there is no way to open apache office. i followed the instruction with no errors but on from the desktop-integration section which mentioned Libre already had a file there.

do i need to uninstall libre first?

The easy solution is to remove all traces of LibreOffice. Open a terminal and enter

sudo apt-get purge libreoffice*

Then reinstall OpenOffice as you did before.

Just wanted to chime in that I had the identical problem and the 'apt-get purge libreoffice*' did the trick.
