[Solved] Linux, Fonts...
Hi, Everyone,
I installed a Linux OS called "elegant OS" on my old netbook and got the Linux version of OpenOffice on it, too....
So I opened up a file that's using mostly Garamond for a font but my netbook doesn't render it properly, substituting some sans serif typeface instead -- yet OpenOffice still calls it Garamond!!
Please advise; thanks a lot....

You need to find and install Garamond font. Open Office is using the closest font it can find.
Edit: Fonts are not embedded in .odt files. The names are, but the fonts are expected to be provided by the operating system. When the correct font is not there, the nearest fit font (not nearest looking font) is used. |

Hi Again, Rory,
I went and found "Garamond 8" for Linux and it's installed -- OpenOffice lists it in the font drop-down menu -- but it's still not displaying a file created with Garamond in Windows 7 in Garamond in Linux (specifically, elementary OS Luna)....
Thanks for any further advice!

You may need to change the font selection in the defined paragraph style(s) and select the new version of Garamond. It may be that for some reason it is aware that the Windows version of Garamond is defined and that definition needs to be changed.
I've tried it on my OpenOffice and it worked on a fresh file. I think changing the definition in the paragraph style is all that is needed.

About Claude Garamond and different fonts based on his works, or simply named from his name, see http://www.garamond.org.
There'a also another font named Garamond released by Monotype (https://www.myfonts.com/fonts/mti/garamond/). In opposition to the formers, it's based rather on some work by Jean Jannon. It is included into some commercial office packages, hence e.g. users of Word have this font on board without explicit buying fonts.

The thing is, Rory, that I really need to be able to work on the same file between different machines...a Windows 7 desktop and an old netbook running Elegant OS Luna (Ubuntu Linux derivative, I understand)...can't CRTL+A each and every time to set things to Garamond....

Thanks, Jan; I did find my "Linux Garamond" from Garamond.Org but it seems like my Linux OS won't simply use it when opening a document created in Windows 7's Garamond font....

Do you save in native ODF (.odt)?

Re: [Solved] Linux, Fonts...
If you find ttf versions of Garamond (or whatever fonts), these can be installed on Windows and Linux. Then your document should find the font, no matter which O.S is being used.
