[Solved] OpenOffice doesn't run in Ubuntu 14.10

I'm see symptoms already described here but I haven't managed to work my way out of my mess.
I had AOO 4.0.1 installed and running on Ubuntu 14.04.
I upgraded to Ubuntu 14.10.
I followed that by installing AOO 4.1.1 as follows.
$ cd en-US/DEBS
$ sudo dpkg -i *.deb
$ cd desktop-integration
$ sudo dpkg -i *.deb
It appeared to install. I found the applications through Unity interface but when I tried to launch one nothing happened.
After reading through discussions I have tried these actions.
sudo apt-get purge libreoffice* : it found 7 packages to remove.

Then, left only openoffice4.1-debian-menus_4.q.q-9775_all.deb in en-US/DEBS/desktop-integration. Then reexecuted sudo dpkg -i *.deb in /desktop-integration.
Apparently there were errors:

Unknown media type in type 'all/allfiles'
Unknown media type in type 'uri/mms'
Unknown media type in type 'uri/mmst'
Unknown media type in type 'uri/mmsu'
Unknown media type in type 'uri/pnm'I
Unknown media type in type 'uri/rtspt'
Unknown media type in type 'uri/rtspu'

Is this the root cause of OpenOffice apps not running? Or do I need to back up further in the process and start again?
I suspect I skipped necessary steps or did things out of order, please set me straight!

Now LibO has been removed I'd suggest reinstalling OO completely. The few unknown mime types are (from memory) shown in all OO/Ubuntu installs so shouldn't cause problems. Later today I'll try an Ubuntu 14.10 install to a fresh hard disk (Xubuntu 14:10) followed by OO 4.1.1 and see how it goes.

Yup, that was sufficient. Looks like I am in business again. The unknown mime types were still there. I think I learned that the upgrade to 14.10 re-introduced some Libre Office packages.

I've just upgraded to Xubuntu 14.10; my existing OpenOffice runs correctly on it. I have another machine upgrading to Xubuntu 14.10 and I will install OpenOffice 4.1.1 (first time install) on that, just to check any potential problems. I'll report back later.
