Hello,
just as I'm writing this, I have an idea on how to resolve this. Nonetheless I like to post, 'cause someone else might run into it.
What's the problem:
Calc is up and running, Draw is up and running, Base is up and running. Where the heck are Impress and Writer?
I shall return.

Did you install them? You can try a repair install.

The Linux distributions I've used always package OO as separate applications. So my guess is that you simply haven't installed the packages that provide the Impress and and Writer applications.
You should have some kind of package manager that allows you to search all the available packages, or perhaps it has an "office" category where you can choose the applications to install.

Hello folks,
yep, that was it. Linux just ain't Windows ... I had to install Impress and Writer base modules and now I'm really madly happy. I had to check the company's software repository., and there are a gazillion modules, languages, base modules for OpenOffice, and me as a bloody newbie at Linux.
Thanks for the hint.
