SCIM works, but no input methods?

Running Debian 6, KDE 4.4.5, Ooo 3.2.1 and SCIM 1.4.9, all of which are installed right out of the box, no modifications, I am experiencing a strange problem

I can start SCIM, it works fine from kwrite, gnome-terminal and other applications, and in Ooo it sort of works: I can call up the little toolbar by pressing Ctrl-Space, but some of the functionality is missing:

I've had it working perfectly in the past - any ideas about what to do to fix it?
