[Solved] OpenOffice 3.4.1 Crash Now won't run

Post by jessev »

Was working in Writer and OpenOffice Crashed and now will not start up.

When crashed OpenOffice asked about saving files for recovery. Clicked OK

After Crash went to start OpenOffice and nothing happens.

Renamed user profile. Nothing

Renamed .openoffice.org folder.

Tried to restart OpenOffice - system recreated .openoffice folder, created user folder, created 3 folder. OpenOffice still does not start.

Uninstalled/Installed OpenOffice 3.4.1 still won't start.

Even rebooted, this is Unix and I should never have to reboot, and it still won't start.

Any Help would be greatly appreciated.

You could try starting the software from a terminal and see what feedback you get.

Otherwise you could create a new user account and try launching the software when logged into that account. At least that will show whether there is a problem with the user account.

I had some work to get out so I had to uninstall 3.4.1 completely and install libreoffice, blehh.

I will reinstall and try your suggestion in the next few days.

Will report back to let you know what I find out.

If LO runs, the problem may be caused by a file in your ~/tmp folder. That folder is used as a temporary folder by my version of OO and is probably the default location. The ~/tmp folder, of course, is not affected by resetting your profile folder.

I expect it's a problem in the OOo settings profile. Getting a fresh profile should cure the problem; see: [Tutorial] The OOo user profile

I removed Libre Office

deleted all folders and files that I thought might have something to do with libreoffice and or any left over openoffice folders in home directory.

deleted anything in ~/tmp directory that appeared to have been created just before or at the time of original openoffice crash.

Reinstalled open office using ubuntu software center.

start openoffice ubuntu 12.10 dashboard home. openoffice creates the following folder structure in home folder:
.openoffice.org/3/user/config

Nothing starts

Go to command line go to /opt/apt/openoffice.org3/program

run ./soffice %u &

returns this error

javaldx: Could not find a Java Runtime Environment!
no suitable windowing system found, exiting.

same error whether or not I type soffice, soffice %U, soffice %U &

java installed
/opt/openoffice.org3/program$ java -version
java version "1.7.0_09"
OpenJDK Runtime Environment (IcedTea7 2.3.3) (7u9-2.3.3-0ubuntu1~12.10.1)
OpenJDK 64-Bit Server VM (build 23.2-b09, mixed mode)

Java Runtime Version
openjdk-7-jre 7u9-2.3.3-0ubuntu1~12.10.1

Thats where we stand today.

Is there a way to log what soffice is doing and where it is failing when I try to start openoffice?

Maybe that's the problem... Try installing the official build:

Perhaps the old 32/64 bit Java problem? Have you a 32 or 64 bit OpenOffice installed? Apache OpenOffice offers a 64 bit version, which might better match your Java.

Woo Hoo

Using Ubuntu SW Center Removed OpenOffice

Installed Synaptic debian package manager

apt-get install synaptic

removed anything and everything that had to do with libreoffice and openoffice

Installed OpenOffice from command line

It now works.

Thanks to everyone for your help. :bravo:

I will join here with my question: my version OpenOficce (3.3.1 - I know, it is old, but is acting best at me) crushed. I tried to do as user jessev - but it didn't work. Reinstallation failed. How can I regain this version? Very much I care about it.
