Installing on a PowerBook G4 running Ubuntu

Post by Simonft »

I'm trying to install OpenOffice ona PowerBook G4 running Ubuntu. Can anybody help me? I get this error.
OpenOffice.org Word Processor cannot be installed on your computer type (powerpc)

Either the application requires special hardware features or the vendor decided to not support your computer type

You are running an unusual configuration which is why things aren't so simple. I assume you are attempting to install the Linux x86 build of OOo. That won't work on your system as your system is PPC based, that's why you get that error. Which version of OOo are you trying to install? How did you get it? There are no official OOo builds for Linux on the PPC architecture. Unless Ubuntu has OOo PPC binaries in it's repositories or a 3rd party repository has one available your only option is to build from source. Building from source is slow and painful so you may have to put up with an older version from a repository.

Hope this helps.
