Hi and welcome to the forum!

See: [Ubuntu] Installing OOo on Debian and Co., the same applies to your distribution.
First install OOo and check in Tools>Options>OOo>Java if the system detects a Java flavor. If not, then install Java from its website. Or from the package manager of your distro.

Please add '[Solved]' at the beginning of your first post title (edit button) if your issue has been fixed.

There is a note on installing OOo 3.3 on gNewSense at
http://www.gnewsense.org/Documentation. ... noffice%29

I haven't read it in detail, but the first lines of it recommend adding Java support by

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get install openoffice.org-java-common
If you have queries arising from that note, come back and we'll see what we can do to help.

Can neither install java, nor install open office 3.3. Java only has 4 files, and open office will not install without java.

java has 4 files to download, nothing to install.
jre-6u31-linux-i586.bin
jre-6u31-linux-i586-rpm.bin
jre-6u31-linux-x64.bin
jre-6u31-linux-x64-rpm.bin

Download of open office specifically states JRE not included for certain versions of Linux, so it appears I am stuck.

How OO version 2.4 is installed then is a mystery. I wanted to get OO version 3.3 for the PDF capability.

If any one knows maybe it's because I don't know how to install programs on linux. Is it? -djs

RPM is not for your distro. You need the .debs.

is my distro Debian or Ubuntu? The comment on gnu.org distro link says gNewSense, a GNU/Linux distribution based on Debian and Ubuntu, with sponsorship from the FSF.

Ubuntu is based on the Debian packaging system. So to install an application, the process is exactly the same. Use .deb packages.

I have no idea what .deb packages are. The file I downloaded from openoffice.org unpacked to a folder called OOO330_m20_native_packed-1_en-US.9567

It is from this folder that i am trying to run a file called "setup" and it is this that causes the error about java mentioned in the first post. "Failed to extract the java Runtime Environmment (JRE) files. (exit code 7). Press return to continue."

So my question is how to proceed since I can neither run the open office install without java, nor does the java download files seem to do anything. What to do with the 4 files I can download? Isn't java a software package to install?

Howcome a previous verson of open office works with this distribution? --djs

Don't use the script, it has never worked. Apply the hints given here: [Ubuntu] Installing OOo on Debian and Co.

The usual place to download the software is this page. Guessing that you used that page, there is a table of installers for various platforms. Just above the table there is a small box which you can tick or not tick depending on whether you want Java included in the installer.

That option is not open to you because you are (evidently) using an operating system based on deb packaging NOT rpm packaging.

If you are using a 32 bit system, you want an installer in the column titled "Linux Intel DEB." If you are using a 64 bit system, you want an installer in the column labelled "Linux x86-64 DEB." If you don't know whether you are using 32 bit or 64 bit, check your operating system documentation or ask its support forum, IRC channel or mailing list.

I should add that if you need Java, download and install it from your system's repositories.

kingfisher,

I did not miss the page. I downloaded Linux Intel DEB, and that unpacks with folders DEBS, licenses, readmes, and a file called update. When I go to DEBS/destktopintegration, I get an error: Conflicts with the Installed package "openoffice.org-core". Previously I had tried to uninstall the open office that came with the destribution, but it would not uninstall, says error, the files are needed elsewhere. -djs

What is the exact error message?
In your package manager (Synaptic?) make sure that there is no OOo package (or LibO package) with 'ubuntu' in the version number. Else, try to uninstall them.

I am trying to run OOO330_m20_native_packed-1_en-US.9567/DEBS/desktop-integration/openoffice.org3.3-debian-menus_3.3-9556_all.deb and this file gives error:

Error: Conflicts with the Installed package 'openoffice.org-core'

There otherwise does not seem to be any other thing to run to install this thing I downloaded called Linux Intel DEB from the openoffice lists of downloads page.

You need to uninstall the openoffice.org-core file using Synaptic or a terminal entry such as

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get remove openoffice.org-core
Then install OpenOffice using the instructions in the first entry of the Tutorial Hagar indicated. Note that you should print this entry out and check off the details as you execute them. There is one line

Code: Select all

sudo dpkg -i *.deb
which is executed in the DEBS directory and again after

Code: Select all

cd desktop-integration
This second execution is often overlooked; it is important as it gives the links to the program components, usually installed in the Office area.

The "secret" was the following steps contained in the tutorial and the comand line items. Exceeding gratefullness to all those who contributed to the solution. -djs

tutorial:
Documentation/How Tos/Installing on Debian based Distros

command line:

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get remove openoffice.org-core

cd OOo_inst_folder/DEBS
   sudo dpkg -i *.deb

cd desktop-integration
   sudo dpkg -i *.deb
Edit: Note: password prompts are not shown in the above Code sequence. Also note that in linux implementations directory/folder names are case sensitive. (RoryOF, Moderator)

For the record, this wiki article has been written from the tutorial that has been linked at least twice in this thread.
