Can't install OpenOffice.org on Ubuntu 11.10
I am new to Open Office and just born to Ubuntu 11.10( or any Ubuntu for that matter) I just intentionally blanked my hard drive in a moment of anti Microsoft aggression, and installed Ubuntu. I was not able to successfully install open office 3.3 after download because the entire environment is so foreign. Even the tutorials I have been following are not lining up with what I see. Please help.

Re: Can't install Openoffice on Ubuntu 11.10
Hi and welcome to the forum!
The easy way: go to the application center and install LibreOffice.
The not that hard way: [Ubuntu] Installing OOo on Debian and Co. Don't forget to use the tab key to auto-complete the filename. You'll see that the terminal and the command line are not really hard. And once you've understood how it works, you'll even install applications with it, it's quicker than the graphical user interface.
Note that you can download the tarball (the archive) and then use Nautilus and right click to uncompress it (easier than the command line IMHO).
Please add '[Solved]' at the beginning of your first post title (edit button) if your issue has been fixed.

Re: Can't install OpenOffice.org on Ubuntu 11.10
If you wish to install OpenOffice on your Ubuntu, you must make sure all traces of LibreOffice are removed first, which you do using Synaptic. When installing OpenOffice use the tutorial Hagar indicated. Note that you must use the
line twice: once in DEBS directory and once whenafter you have changed directory by
This last use of the sudo etc line installs the links to the program applications and is often overlooked by newcomers to Ubuntu.
Code: Select all
sudo dpkg -i *.deb
Code: Select all
cd desktop-integration
Edit: It is important to remember that Linux directory and file names are case sensitive. Windows has made us careless in this regard. |

Synaptic is not installed by default anymore. Open a terminal and type sudo apt-get install synaptic and then enter your password.

It has been installed, run it from the applications menu (not sure where it is in Unity, I use Gnome 3).

Search if there are libreoffice packages and install them if you want to use them. If you want to install OOo, you've to remove them (if installed).
